Following the release of “Tales from Topographic Oceans” in 1973, the band embarked on a Euro & US tour from November 1st to April 23rd, 1974, encompassing a total of 78 shows. This recording captures the early part of that tour, specifically the November 23rd, 1973 performance at the Rainbow Theatre in London, fully recorded from a remarkably good audience master recently released by a taper. This is a rare recording that has never been circulated before, and a major selling point is that it completes a valuable early live performance from the tour, before the album was actually released. The rather rough playing style, coming from the 10th show of the tour, is refreshingly unique, and from the middle to the end of the show, they play all the songs from “Tales from Topographic Oceans,” each of which is over 20 minutes long, with a stronger rock feel compared to later performances. In particular, “Divine Revelation” is full of R&R groove, aided by Howe’s energetic playing. Furthermore, “Ritual” features one of the most moving performances of the entire tour, “Reminiscence” is only performed during this period as it was dropped from the setlist for the following year’s tour, and although an official DX box set of the tour’s live performances was released, it omits tracks like “Siberian Kartur,” “Roundabout,” and “Starship Trooper.” In short, every aspect of this performance is a must-have for fans.
