Description

“Monsters of Rock” (hereinafter referred to as MOR) is the legendary massive rock festival held at Castle Donington in the UK. Launched in 1980, the festival expanded internationally, and in 1990, it toured across various European countries. This release features a TV special covering the German edition of MOR (held locally under the name “Super Rock 1990”). It is a fantastic compilation title that captures highlights and interviews from the bands that performed that day. The German MOR took place on September 1st—roughly two weeks after the original Donington event and about ten days after the release of the album *Slip of the Tongue*. Although The Quireboys and Thunder did not participate, it was a major event headlined by Whitesnake and Aerosmith. This release includes pro-shot footage of performances and interviews with Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Poison, and Vixen. Additionally, a bonus segment featuring Dio’s Dortmund concert is included (interestingly, the name “Ronnie James Dio!!” pops up frequently in the interviews with the other bands as well). The headliner, Whitesnake, appears first. While the Donington MOR performance is well-known thanks to the official DVD, it turns out that pro-shot footage of the German show also exists. What feels fresh when watching this is the view of the entire stage. The official DVD *Live at Donington 1990* was created by repurposing footage originally shot for the venue’s big screens—resulting in a limited number of camera angles and a heavy reliance on close-ups (since the live audience didn’t need a full-stage view). In contrast, because this release is derived from a TV broadcast, it captures the full stage setup perfectly. It conveys the atmosphere of the era—details like the stage layout and the physical spacing between band members—in a way that feels new, even if you thought you knew the show well. For those who saw the tour in Japan, it will likely bring back vivid memories: “Ah, that’s exactly how it was!” It’s not just a single wide shot; multi-camera angles capture perfect close-ups of each member (though the constant screen effects—typical of TV shows from that era—do give it a dated feel: *laughs*). In any case, given that the only other footage from that time was thought to be the Donington Monsters of Rock set, this is unmissable pro-shot material. The footage of the other bands is equally fascinating. There’s Poison, whose open-air stage setting during their daytime slot perfectly complements their glamorous vibe; and Aerosmith, featuring a mischievous Steven Tyler who is in his element, boldly getting up close and personal with the female interviewer. Vixen is a particular highlight. The stage presence of vocalist Janet Gardner, guitarist Jan Kuehnemund, and bassist Share Pedersen is not only glamorous but sharp and incredibly punchy—proving exactly why they made their mark on the 80s scene. While all-female metal bands are enjoying a boom these days, the talent of these “metal queens” is on a completely different level from the average upstart. Even if you don’t know the songs, the performance by these stunning, charismatic women is dazzling and thoroughly captivating. It is a sheer delight to see them shining in such high-quality pro-shot footage. While two songs per band might feel a bit brief, what this release captures is the glorious era of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal just before the genre was overrun by the ugly monster known as “Modern Heaviness.” Paired with the included press CD *Slip of the Globe*, this 70-minute experience transports you back to the time when metal shone brightest. We hope you take this opportunity to enjoy it to the fullest! Monsters Of Rock, Maimarktgegelande Eistadion, Mannheim, Germany 1st September 1990 PRO-SHOT (68:05) Whitesnake 1.
