Description
With only two solo performances scheduled in Japan in 2026, in Tokyo and Osaka, this edition includes a full recording of the first show, March 23rd, at NHK Hall in Tokyo, using multi-stereo IEM matrix audio, and a DVD featuring high-quality audience footage of the same day’s performance. First, the multi-IEM matrix specification mixes the stereo IEM sources with different mix balances used by each member on stage with a digital audience source in exquisite balance. This captures Todd’s vocals as the main focus, with the keyboards and guitars perfectly separated into left and right channels, and the rhythm section coming at you with overwhelming stereo separation, all with astonishing separation and resolution. In addition, there are no clicks or guides, which are common with IEM audio. Furthermore, the DVD footage, shot with a digital camera, is recorded from a 4K master and captures the angles perfectly with almost no obstructions, and the audio part is synchronized with the CD’s multi-IEM matrix source, so the quality, including the audio, is worlds apart from fragmented footage on YouTube and other sites. And the Japanese performance, held just a year after the previous year’s show, was unexpectedly different from what one might expect, starting abruptly with “Everybody” from 2015. The setlist continued with many core selections, including songs from “A Cappella” and numbers from his solo albums from the 80s and 90s onward. Of course, there was also a Motown medley from the 70s’ “Who Am I?”, songs from “Faithful”, and of course, “I Saw the Light” and “Can We Still Be Friends,” before ending with “Hello It’s Me,” a setlist that truly summarized his career of over half a century. In addition, there was a cover of Cole’s “The Walls Came Down,” which he hadn’t done in a long time, and the participation of his Utopia-era friend Kasim Sulton, making it an absolutely blissful first night performance. This Japan-exclusive memorial item completely recreates that experience in sound and video.
