This is a collection of session recordings from the album “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll.” Originally a single CD, it has been upgraded with newly unearthed recordings. This is the fourth album released on the Rolling Stones label and Mick Taylor’s final participation. The album is filled with catchy rock sounds, including the title track, which remains a highlight of their live performances, and “Time Waits for No One,” where Taylor’s brilliant guitar playing shines. The title track, “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It),” is a masterpiece that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the Stones. “Till The Next Goodbye” is one of the Stones’ hidden gems. A romantic acoustic ballad interwoven with Mick Taylor’s delicate obbligato, and Nicky Hopkins’ brilliant piano adds color to it. “Time Waits For No One” is also a masterpiece. Some describe the intro as having an enka (Japanese ballad) feel, but the dramatic world that unfolds from there is one of a kind. “Fingerprint File.” Here, the Stones truly venture into funk. Phaser-laden guitar riffs. Billy Preston on clavinet. And Mick Jagger’s mysterious vocals. The presence of guest musicians is significant on this album, and compared to previous Stones works, it can feel a little more layered in places. That may be the reason why opinions are divided. However, the songs themselves are extremely well-crafted. Rather, if you listen to it without preconceived notions, it can be said that this is an album that allows you to fully appreciate the richness of the Stones in the 1970s.
