Description

This 4-disc live collection brings together precious live performances by Pat Metheny with his trio from 1999 to 2006! Featuring recordings from performances in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, this collection offers approximately 444 minutes of Metheny’s exceptional guitar playing and the intense interplay unique to a trio. Through different lineups—Christian McBride & Antonio Sanchez, Larry Grenadier & Bill Stewart, and Scott Colley & Antonio Sanchez—you can enjoy how Metheny’s trio music changed and developed all at once. From beautiful ballads to tense improvisations, acoustic sounds, and dynamic jazz/fusion, this collection fully captures the charm of Pat Metheny. This 4-DVD collection, condensing approximately 7 hours and 24 minutes of Pat Metheny Trio performances from 1999 to 2006, is a must-see for fans! Details of each disc are listed below as they were at the time of release. Disc 1 features a nearly complete 82-minute recording of a special live performance at Jazzbaltica in Germany on June 30, 2006, led by the Pat Metheny Trio + Nils Lundgren and featuring a stellar lineup of guest musicians. The recording is from the broadcast master and is of official-quality professional shot. The Metheny Trio, with Scott Colley on bass, and Nils, whose recent visit to Japan with the reunited CRUSADERS and FUNK UNIT is still fresh in people’s memories, are featured in a festival-like setting separate from their individual stages. The show opens with Pat and Nils performing “My Funny Valentine” and “Picasso” as a duo, and for the third song, “When We Were Free,” the two members of the Trio are joined by saxophonist Marcus Strickland. After the song ends, just when it seems Marcus will leave, Bobo Stenson appears and begins a breathtaking duet with Nils on “Don’t Go To Stranger.” Nils’s signature style, evident in his trombone playing from the opening track “My Funny…”, is a highlight of this album. Furthermore, Marcus returns, and the quintet delivers a truly magnificent performance of “African Skies,” showcasing a full range of old and new talent. Just as the excitement reaches its peak in this blissful sonic world, the new-century soul legend Raul Midon makes an appearance! His performance of “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely” is incredibly compelling, a whirlwind of emotion, and the sound speaks for itself. The album concludes with a full-length rendition of Eddie Harris’s “Freedom Jazz Dance.” A must-have for jazz fans! This professional edition includes a menu chapter and has a running time of 82 minutes. Jazzbaltica, Salzau, Germany, June 30, 2006. Tracks: My Funny Valentine, Picasso, When We Were Free, Don’t Go To Strangers, African Skies, Don’t Let Me Be Lonely, Freedom, Jazz Dance. Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitars), Nils Landgren (vocal & trombone), Scott Colley (bass), Antonio Sanchez (drums), Bobo Stenson (piano), Marcus Strickland (saxophone), Raul Midon (vocal & guitar). APPROX. 82min. Disc 2: High-definition pro-shot recording of the Pat Metheny Trio’s July 9, 2004 performance in Switzerland. This valuable live performance by the “new trio” featuring Christian McBride and Tony Sanchez is captured in high-definition video, digitally remastered from the broadcast pro-shot master, and runs for nearly two hours. Just like their previous visit to Japan in 2003, which served as the debut stage for the “new trio,” the show opens with Metheny’s solo guitar, and the trio begins playing “So May It Secretly Begin.” The trio’s highly skilled playing leaves you breathless from start to finish. The songs, which were new at the time, may offer new discoveries when you listen to them carefully now that you’re already familiar with them. This professional edition includes menu chapters and has a running time of 115 minutes. Filmed with a single camera from the upper level of the stage, there are occasional moments of shaky camera work, but the sound quality is good, making it a fairly good title overall. As could be seen at their Japanese tour at the end of the previous year, Pat’s aim with this new trio was not to satisfy the so-called “insatiable thirst for jazz sound” that had been the case with the many side projects he had been working on alongside PMG up until then, but rather to approach the unique PMG sound that he has been pursuing without wavering since its formation in 1977 from a different angle. In that sense, this is a must-see for fans who have been following PMG for many years. It is a professional edition with menu chapters and a running time of 147 minutes. At a turning point in his career, Pat boldly selected younger musicians, and the rhythm section of bassist Grenadier and Bill Stewart is a major strength. This powerful rhythm section drives the performance forward, and Metheny’s guitar swings joyfully, carried along by the energy. The performance of Metheny’s signature piece, “Question and Answer,” clearly shows the gradual build-up of tension. The running time is 100 minutes.
