Launched in 2019, the “Side-Eye” unit has remained active—continuing into 2026 despite minor lineup changes—and stands as one of Metheny’s most stable ongoing projects. Although the debut album *Side-Eye NYC* was released earlier, the group was unable to tour extensively due to the COVID-19 pandemic; a European tour finally kicked off in May 2022. This release captures a nearly complete, two-hour-and-eleven-minute recording of the tour’s early show in Düsseldorf, Germany (May 4), sourced from a digital audience master that has undergone state-of-the-art digital remastering. While the “Side-Eye” concept originally centered on Metheny and keyboardist James Francies—a player of phenomenal technique—accompanied by a rotating cast of exceptional drummers, this tour features Chris Fishman on keyboards. The setlist balances tracks from the *Side-Eye* album with a generous selection of Metheny’s classic hits. Highlights include “Timeline” (co-written with Michael Brecker) and “Zenith Blues” (featuring the Orchestrion); while inheriting the spirit of the organ trio format, the group constructs a massive soundscape that defies the limitations of a three-piece ensemble—a feat only Metheny could achieve. The performance is notably more solid and aggressive than that of the “Side-Eye Plus” quintet lineup seen in 2026.
