Description
This 4-disc DVD collection compiles rare live performances from 1987 to 2000, primarily featuring collaborations between Pat Metheny and renowned saxophonist Michael Brecker! Enjoy the thrilling interplay between these two leading figures in the jazz/fusion world, with content centered on their 2000 Warsaw performance, as well as live shows in Paris and Vienna, and even footage related to “Jaco Pastorius Tribute 1987.” Performances with accomplished musicians such as Larry Goldings and Bill Stewart are also major highlights. Metheny’s original guitar work and Brecker’s overwhelming saxophone playing, along with their exceptional improvisational performances, make for a fulfilling collection of approximately 305 minutes of footage showcasing different stage setups and time periods. This 4-disc set is recommended not only for jazz/fusion fans, but also for fans of both Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker. Details of each disc are listed below as they were at the time of release. Disc 1 features a high-definition professional recording of a live performance in Warsaw, Poland, from the 2000 tour of a special quartet formed with Michael Brecker. Michael is in top form, and Pat seems to be thoroughly enjoying the orthodox yet bluesy arrangement of saxophone and organ. The first half consists of Michael’s repertoire, including two standards, and the second half features Pat’s repertoire. Both performers seem to have fully showcased their abilities, resulting in a satisfying performance. As an additional bonus feature, there is footage of Pat’s performance from a Jaco Pastorius tribute concert held in New York in 1987. It appears to be a session with Marcus Miller and Victor Bailey. The picture quality is not the best, but the performance is very high-energy and a must-see, especially considering the interaction with the virtuoso bassist. The total running time is 170 minutes. Disc 1 & 2 Approx. 170 mins Disc 3 LIVE AT PARIS, FRANCE 07/02/2000 This is a recommended album for jazz and fusion fans, featuring live footage of Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker performing together in July 2000. Live at Paris Jazz a Vilette, France 07.02.2000 EXTRADITION HALF PAST LATE INTO THE DREAM WHAT DO YOU WANT? Approx. Disc 4 (45 min) features professionally filmed performances from the 1999 and 2000 Vienna Jazz Festival. First and foremost is the 2000 performance featuring Michael Brecker in a special quartet. This is the same lineup as on Michael Brecker’s masterpiece album “Time Is of the Essence,” which Pat McGrath joined. They play each other’s signature songs equally, and the stage is evenly balanced. Both groups showcase their fusion and jazz-oriented styles in a good balance, resulting in a very substantial live performance. You can see Michael at his peak. The 1999 performance is with the familiar trio. The performance is lively and full of energy. The audience’s reactions are clearly conveyed to the players directly, creating a sense of “groove” in their performance. The running time is 90 minutes.
