Description
This 4-disc collection brings together precious live footage from 1977 to 1988, spanning the Pat Metheny Group’s early days to their golden age! From their 1977 appearance on “Austin City Limits” to their 1978 Berlin, 1980 Hamburg, 1982 Montreal, and 1988 Rome performances, this collection covers approximately 11 years of their journey, totaling about 343 minutes. From the fresh and liberating sound of the late ’70s to the grand and sophisticated group sound established in the ’80s, this video collection traces the musical evolution of the Pat Metheny Group chronologically. Many of their representative songs, such as “Phase Dance,” “San Lorenzo,” “Are You Going With Me?”, “First Circle,” and “Last Train Home,” are included. This 4-DVD collection, condensing the history of the early PAT METHENY GROUP into approximately 5 hours and 43 minutes, is a must-see for fans! Details of each disc are listed below as they were at the time of release. Disc 1 features a digitally remastered recording of the Pat Metheny Group’s 1988 Rome concert, taken from the broadcast-quality pro-shot master. As the setlist largely consists of songs from “Still Life (Talking),” this concert has a strong promotional aspect for “Still Life (Talking),” which was produced the previous year after the group moved from ECM to Geffen Records. While not of “ultra-high definition” quality, there are no major image distortions, and considering the era, the picture quality is excellent. With its strong South American rhythms and memorable melodies that stick in your head after just one listen, this is a must-see video item that allows you to rediscover the brilliance of “Still Life (Talking),” which encapsulates all the charm of the Pat Metheny Group during this period! Moreover, it is a DVD made directly from the master source that was recently rebroadcast, with a quality that is orders of magnitude superior to the versions that have been circulating on VHS etc. The performance itself is, as is well known, the simplest yet strongest group lineup in Metheny’s career, including L. Mays, and features the same members who recorded his popular first album and the infamous “American Garage”. Therefore, the setlist is almost entirely comprised of songs from these two albums, making it an irresistible treat for fans. The live performance itself takes place in a small clubhouse, and perhaps because of the close proximity to the audience, the members all seem relaxed, creating a bright and open mood, just like the albums. This is a must-see video from a period when they were on the rise, with momentum palpable, as their third album would go on to win a Grammy Award the following year!
