Pat Metheny / Germany October 20, 2024

This is an audience recording of astonishing sonic beauty, vividly capturing the Frankfurt performance of the “Dream Box / MoonDial” solo tour—a true culmination of his career. The depth of harmony he has long pursued, the dynamics that effortlessly command the acoustic space, and the lyricism imbued in every single note—all of these elements emerge through an intimate dialogue with the audience. The multi-layered soundscape—hard to believe it comes from just a single guitar—truly embodies the essence of Metheny as a “one-man orchestra.” Particularly noteworthy is the balance between high-level improvisation and structural beauty; the process by which delicate phrases weave together and eventually soar into a magnificent sonic flow draws the listener into a state of deep immersion. Ranging from gentle to sharp, the breadth of his expression eloquently speaks to the richness of his recent solo work. The recording is clear and three-dimensional, capturing a sense of realism so vivid one might mistake it for a soundboard feed. It offers superb quality where every detail—from the nuances of his fingertips to the expansive spread of the reverberation—feels tangible. The sense of presence, as if experiencing the performance from the front row, represents a new pinnacle for audience recordings. This is a must-listen release for anyone wishing to experience the future of jazz guitar.
