Description
At long last, a rare live recording from the *Be Here Now* tour—capturing Oasis at the peak of their live performance prowess—is being released after nearly 30 years without a single reissue! Furthermore, technical flaws in the original recording that were left unaddressed upon its 1997 release have been meticulously corrected while preserving the pristine audio quality. The combination of the audience’s frenzied enthusiasm—arguably the most intense of the entire tour—and the band’s high-energy performance makes this a must-listen. Be sure to pick it up as a set alongside the simultaneously released *Definitive Glasgow 1997 2nd Night: For Non-Bottleholders Only*! While that Glasgow title—capturing the high-octane second night in Glasgow, just five days before their legendary Manchester G-Mex show—has been revitalized with the best possible sound, the Madrid performance from November 10, 1997, is another electrifying show that, like the Glasgow date, had never been reissued until now. The Madrid show took place during the European leg of the *Be Here Now* world tour, which kicked off in November; that same month also saw the famous Munich concert (well-known to fans via our previously released stereo soundboard title, *Munich 1997*). Amidst this schedule, the Madrid show was captured in a high-quality stereo audience recording that has existed for years. However, the only CD release at the time was a CD-R titled *World Famous*; despite the recording’s immersive atmosphere, it had languished without a proper reissue until now. Yet, this sole surviving audience source is renowned not only for its clarity and high fidelity but also for vividly capturing the incredible, fiery passion of the Spanish audience. From the very moment playback begins, you are thrust into a whirlwind of crowd excitement; among the many audience recordings of Oasis, few capture the live atmosphere quite like this one. For instance, as the Noel-led segment featuring “Magic Pie” and “Don’t Look Back In Anger” concludes mid-set, the audience immediately erupts into a massive chant of “Noel! Noel! Noel!” Then, before the first encore track “Fade In-Out,” there is another huge sing-along—this time the “Ole, Ole, Ole” chant typical of South American crowds. It is nothing short of a miracle that this fervor never drowns out the band’s performance while listening! Yet, for all the appeal of this Madrid show, it was not without flaws. While the audio image is generally clear, there are occasional instances of clipping and distortion—likely due to a recording level error by the taper. This issue was present at the time of the original “World Famous” release, suggesting it stems from the master recording itself. Furthermore, although the show appears to have been recorded on DAT rather than analog cassette, the taper seemingly used three one-hour DAT tapes; while the pitch was accurate, the tape changes resulted in a cut at the very end of “Magic Pie,” as well as a fade-out and cut during the drone sound effects following “Fade In-Out.” Prominent hiss noise, particularly between songs, also detracted from the listening experience. These issues were likely the primary reasons preventing a reissue, despite the band’s stellar performance. However, simply re-releasing this valuable recording as-is would have been pointless. Therefore, for this release, we have successfully performed the most extensive restoration possible. While the occasional distortion and the cut at the end of “Magic Pie” were unavoidable, we succeeded in restoring the original audio by eliminating the fade-out applied after “Fade In-Out.” Moreover, regarding the cut in that same section, we were fortunate enough to achieve a seamless transition where the splice is literally undetectable. Thanks to this work, the transition from “Fade In-Out” to the following track, “Champagne Supernova,” is seamless. Furthermore, the distracting hiss noise between tracks has been naturally minimized; while the sound image was already good to begin with, this processing has made the listening experience even more enjoyable. As for the band’s energy, since this show took place more than two weeks before the Den Bosch concert where Liam damaged his voice, they were in the high-octane form typical of the *Be Here Now* tour. Fueled by the wild enthusiasm of a crowd with a spirited, Latin-style vibe, Liam spent the entire show riling up the audience! He even breezed through “Don’t Go Away”—a song that was eventually dropped from the setlist for most shows—without a hitch, delivering a quintessential performance for the European tour of that era. It is truly significant that this *Be Here Now* tour recording—which has never seen an official reissue in nearly three decades—is finally being revived in its best-ever form this week following an audio restoration upgrade. After all, this is a recording that never even received a CD reissue. Since the setlist and timing differ, be sure to pick this up as a set alongside the simultaneously released *Definitive Glasgow 1997 2nd Night: For Non-Bottleholders Only*!
