This release features a full two-hour recording of the first day of Miles Davis’s two-day appearance at the annual jazz festival held in Nice, France on July 13, 1988, during their Euro tour. The FM broadcast soundboard recording has been newly remastered in 2026. Although the original broadcast recording was of good quality, there were some instances of hiss noise and inconsistencies in the sound, which have been corrected and the sound pressure adjusted using the latest equipment to achieve the best possible quality. This performance took place just before and immediately following the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival, and the stage presence is reminiscent of Montreux, with a funky feel permeating the air. The band’s overall sound is incredibly sharp, and Foley’s guitar and Ricky’s drums, in particular, symbolize the groove of this period, with incisive playing throughout. Miles, of course, is also in top form. The flow from “Tutu,” featuring Miles Davis’s fantastic virtuoso playing, to “Time After Time,” and then to the following Prince number “Movie Star,” is particularly noteworthy, with its mellow and delicate transition from a super funky rhythm. Of course, the overall performance is also superb, making this a must-listen for fans.
