Description

Miles Davis’s pivotal 1970 appearance at the Fillmore (East & West) was a turning point that propelled him from the confines of jazz to the center of hip music worldwide. The highlight of that 1970 run, the final performance of four consecutive shows at the Fillmore West, is now available in a definitive, newly remastered edition from the best-quality master tapes! This release captures the October 18th performance, the final day of the four consecutive shows at the Fillmore West in 1970—a show that drew the largest audience of Miles’ career, consistently overwhelming audiences with its powerful stage presence that surpassed even rock bands, and which served as the trigger for his rise to fame. This definitive edition features the best-quality master tapes recently discovered, further enhanced with the label’s meticulous mastering to deliver exceptional sound quality! At the time, Miles Davis was 44, Gary Bartz 29, Keith Jarrett 25, Jack DeJohnette 28, Airto 29, and Michael Henderson a mere 18—a supergroup comprised of talented musicians in their prime, roaring with energy on the stage of the Fillmore West, packed with rock fans! This was one of the last stages for the group in their native America before DeJohnette formed his own group, Compost, and Keith went solo, and it was a live performance at the Fillmore, so the energy of Miles and all the other members was off the charts. Keith’s keyboards moved around flamboyantly, DeJohnette’s drumming was almost rock-and-roll, and Miles drove the band forward with his powerful, energetic shouts, creating an unstoppable and tremendous stage performance! Particularly outstanding on this day were Keith Jarrett, the master of the sound at the time, and Michael Henderson, the youngest member of the group. The core of the Miles Davis group’s sound from this era—Keith’s roaring, writhing organ and his trademark groovy, funky bass—roars from beginning to end. And thankfully, the bass sound, which was muffled in previous releases, is now clearly defined thanks to meticulous mastering, resulting in a superb sound image that truly showcases its power! Listen carefully to this definitive version of the legendary performance at the Fillmore in 1970, the year that triggered the biggest turning point in Miles Davis’s career!
