Description

This is a crucial live recording of Miles Davis’s mid-1980s, an essential piece of music when discussing Miles Davis. It’s an audience recording of the first night (September 8th) of his 1986 world tour, which included consecutive performances in Rio de Janeiro on September 8th, 9th, and 10th. This recording has been brilliantly restored by an overseas Miles Davis enthusiast. This first night marked the debut of the Miles Davis Band, with Garth Weber selected as guitarist at Miles’s request. Naturally, the live performance began with tension not only for Weber himself, but also for Miles and the band members. You can feel that the true essence of the Miles Davis Band, which freely traverses pop, funk, and jazz, has reached a new level. Over the modern groove woven by synthesizers, sharp guitar, and a tightly undulating rhythm section, Miles’ muted trumpet cuts in sharply, and the tension that dominates the space is truly the pinnacle of his maturity. The recording sounds almost like a soundboard, but engineer Ron Lohman used a Bayer Dynamics microphone placed on a stand, kept the microphone level at around 10-20%, performed time-corrected matrix processing, and also set the reverb processor low in the mix.
