Finally, a two-disc set featuring a complete, high-fidelity recording of a legendary night—the only one of its kind—where Keith Richards performed the entire album plus one Mozart piece in front of an audience, coinciding with the recording of “Bridge of Light,” his greatest masterpiece as a classical pianist! The performance took place on March 14, 1993, at Alice Tully Hall in New York. The performers were the same as on the album: Keith Richards, Thomas and the Fairfield Orchestra, along with McKalski, Butler, McCarty, and others. While the order of some pieces differed, all the tracks from the album were performed, plus a Mozart piano concerto. This release captures every moment of that day in superb, high-fidelity sound. This concert is known as one of the few performances of Keith Richards’ classical works, and features a magnificent performance of “Bridge of Light,” considered one of the most accomplished of his classical compositions. This album features Keith Richards’ characteristic lyrical and romantic melodies, including “Elegy for Violin,” a lament written for his grandmother; “Adagio for Oboe,” a memorable piece with a pastoral and tranquil melody; and five sonata suites. Around this time, Keith faced criticism from both the jazz and classical worlds—”Why write classical music?” and “He’s a jazz pianist!”—but he dismissed these criticisms, stating, “There are no genres in music.” This philosophy is clearly reflected in this performance. While the recently released 1976 White Mountain Festival recording is perhaps the rarest concert in Keith’s career, this performance is equally remarkable, and I confidently declare it a masterpiece that Keith fans, and indeed all music lovers across genres, should listen to!
