We are proud to present a release that captures the authentic sound of Keith Jarrett during the European Quartet’s 1977 tour. This recording documents the concert held on October 13—the second date of the tour—at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, a venue shared by the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. It features a stunning, top-tier audience recording. To recap the European leg of the tour: October 12 (Zurich, Switzerland), October 13 (Paris, France – this release), October 14 (Paris, France), October 15 (Berlin, Germany), and October 16 (Vienna, Austria), followed by the continuation of the tour in the United States starting in November. While the third day’s Paris performance has previously been released and is available in our shop, this second-day performance marks its debut on CD; unlike the October 14th show, this release spans two discs and contains a total of seven tracks. The newly unearthed source material is an audience master of such high quality that it is hard to believe it was recorded over 40 years ago. Long kept under wraps as a “phantom” recording, the near-complete performance has finally surfaced in master-quality sound. The fact that Keith’s piano is captured with such crisp clarity suggests the taper was positioned very close to him. Furthermore, the version of “The Journey Home” on Disc 2—clocking in at over 21 minutes and 30 seconds—is the longest version in existence and an absolute must-hear. This is a definitive title for the tour, offering a listening experience that is fully satisfying even if you own no other recordings from this series.
