Description
In 1983, a quiet monologue resonated in an ancient city in northern Italy. This performance, captured in an audience recording, offers a glimpse into the very moment sound is born, a time of intense focus. A single note rises from silence. Breathing waits for the reverberation to completely dissolve into the space. Melodies don’t speak, but rather appear, disappear, and reappear in another form. Rather than the presentation of a clear theme, there is a fluid musical generation process shaped by a chain of sounds. Solo piano during this period leans more deeply towards introspection, exploring the balance between sound and space, than towards torrent-like improvisation. Phrases never speak excessively, harmonies remain transparent and long-lasting, and time revolves not in a linear fashion but in a circular motion. The piano touches the space, the space responds, and music continues to be generated in this back-and-forth. This is a record that conveys the core of 1980s solo improvisation, filled with deep concentration and quiet tension.
