The Jacksons’ Triumph Tour was held from July 8, 1981 to September 26, 1981. This is a Blu-ray title containing a compilation video that summarizes the live performances in chronological order. Actually, there is no such thing as the best professional shot video. Even so, we have carefully arranged and recorded existing footage. By 1981, the Jacksons had two platinum-selling albums, 1978’s Destiny and 1980’s Triumph, and lead singer Michael Jackson was finishing up promotion for his 1979 smash album Off the Wall. Although it is a Jacksons tour, songs from “Off The Wall” are played, and Michael also incorporates new stage production ideas that suit his taste. Inspired by Earth, Wind & Fire’s live shows, Michael created the costumes and directed and designed the stage. It incorporates the magic created by Doug Hennig (Michael disappearing into smoke in the middle of “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”). The stage had a horn section on the left, drums in the center, and a keyboard on the right. Randy Jackson also plays the piano, keyboard, and percussion. The Triumph Tour began in Memphis, Tennessee and concluded with a week of sold-out shows in Inglewood. Each performance has received very high praise. One of the reasons for this is Michael’s leadership and outstanding showmanship. The brothers also received positive reviews, with particular praise given to Randy’s playing ability, Tito’s musicality, and Marlon’s dancing ability. The Triumph Tour was the Jackson brothers’ last full-fledged tour as a group. After this, Michael’s further success as a solo artist far exceeded his work with his brothers. A live album was also released at the end of 1981. “The Jacksons Live!” was certified gold upon its release and sold over 2 million copies worldwide. Michael Jackson said, “It was the first show that didn’t include any frills.” First, the first day of the Triumph tour, the Memphis performance. This is a one-camera audience shot taken by the people involved. The video is relatively clear, but the audio is a little far away (there are parts where the sound gets a little loud during She’s Out Of My Life), and there are cheers. There is no video between songs, it is incomplete, and there are cuts. Only the beginning of the live performance is recorded. This will be followed by a performance in Dallas on July 11th. This is a one-camera audience shot of the people involved, taken from the back of the audience. The sound is relatively good (there is some noise). The image is also relatively clear. However, it is only fragments and partial recordings. There is valuable Intermission footage. It’s unclear, and there’s almost no audio in the first half. Footage from the Jackson 5 era is shown on the screen. However, the subsequent conversations between the members are well recorded. Michael insists that he wants to sing a new song, but the members and most importantly the audience want it, so he performs a Jackson 5 medley for you. And in July, the exact date is unknown, but this is footage from a rehearsal in Pensacola, Florida. Fragments of conversations between members are filmed. It’s a blurry image. July 22nd performance in Atlanta. This is a relatively good image. However, the only video of the Jacksons’ performance is Can You Feel It, which is a combination of fragments. It could be from the news or a promotion for a concert. August 2nd, Buffalo performance. This is a one-camera audience shot of the people involved, taken from the audience side. Both video and sound fall into the clear category. However, it is a partial recording. MSG performance, August 18th. Here’s a little interview with Michael. Snippets of Can You Feel It and Things I Do For You, good news footage. Performance in Providence on August 21st. The footage is relatively good, but only fragments. Performance in Nashville on August 31st. It is a good video as it captures Michael close up, but this is also a partial recording. Auckland performance, September 22nd. Includes interviews with Marlon and fragments including grainy footage. It seems to be material for news, but it is not for viewing, it is just a document. To be honest, I was disappointed that there were only fragmentary videos so far. But things get pretty decent from here. The sold-out Inglewood show is on September 25th. The video is a little grainy and the audio is so-so, but the professional camera work makes it worth watching. I’m glad that the second half of the live performance, which has not appeared before, is included. And on September 26th, there will be a performance in Inglewood. This is commonly known as version 1, which is considered to be the highest quality video during the Triumph tour. Although it cannot be said to be a perfect professional shot due to image distortion, etc., we use the highest quality video master in existence. Contains the time code. There are also parts where four shots are shown as 4-frames, with each camera showing a different angle. Intermission is divided into 4 frames, but there is no audio and some parts have no video. And finally, on September 26th, this is version 2, which does not include a 4-frame camera. The video is a little blurry and distorted compared to version 1, and there are parts where the video is hidden by the image (it feels like the video is slightly transparent). There is a time code. The first half of Intermission is only a timecode video, but there is audio. There is footage from Working Day And Night onward, but it’s partial, there’s no audio, and there are cuts. As for Shake Your Body Down To Ground, it’s only very partial. Although there is nothing that can be called the definitive video of the Triumph Tour, I think you can get a good idea of what the Triumph Tour was like from these existing videos.
