Description
This is a private live performance held for employees at the BET headquarters in Washington, D.C., in November 1999, prior to the release of the album *Voodoo*. It is the only confirmed live recording from the *Voodoo* era featuring a performance of “Spanish Joint.” While it is a raw soundboard recording—with abrupt starts, sudden cut-offs, and fluctuating volume levels—the performance itself is superb. The second half features a partial recording of the set performed by D’Angelo and The Soultronics at the Montreux Jazz Festival (Auditorium Stravinsky, Switzerland) on July 14, 2000; despite some minor audio dropouts, the soundboard recording packs a powerful punch. You’ll be floored by the extended funk intro to “Brown Sugar” and the incredible 22-minute jam session that segues from “Lady” into “Baby I’m A Star”—a performance sure to be the envy of any music fan. BET HQ, Washington DC, November 1999: Spanish Joint, One Mo’ Gin, Lady, Left & Right, Good To Your Earhole [Funkadelic], Untitled (How Does It Feel), Me And Those Dreamin’ Eyes Of Mine, Shit, Damn, Motherfucker, Brown Sugar, Lady – Jonz In My Bonz – Jam.
