Bassist José Armando Golla, who will be the key rhythm section, is one of Cuba’s best bassists, and is remembered for his wonderful performance at the Blue Note Tokyo performance in 2024, the same year as this performance, with John Beasley’s trio, known for collaborating with Miles, Kamasi Washington, and others. He is famous for his work with artists such as Arturo Sandoval from Irakere and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Drummer Horacio El Negro Hernández also came to Japan with Gola as part of the Beasley Trio, one of Cuba’s most powerful drummers, and his performances with Gonzalo, Michel Camilo, Roy Hargrove, Katsumi Watanabe, and Kip Hanrahan were especially memorable. Incidentally, the performances by the two of them as a unit, including Hanrahan’s work with Robbie Ameen, who was Ruben Blades’ regular drummer, transcended genres and let us hear the best drums in the world. Here again, Hernandez introduces single-note solos, chords, a bass line that makes use of a wide range, a thick and clear gora, and a complex clave with a foot cowbell, creating an outrageous polyrhythm with an overwhelming play that goes beyond the super, making the band’s impulse even deeper and richer.He is joined by the great percussionists Roberto Torres and Julian Valdez, who have the hands of God, and this rhythm section is all you need! A clave with this elaborate structural framework would not be able to do that unless it had such great features!
