Description

This 4-DVD professional live collection brings together precious live footage of jazz piano master Bill Evans from 1965-1966! Featuring historic performances recorded in Copenhagen, Oslo, Paris, and London, this video collection allows you to fully appreciate the charm of early Evans. It includes many famous songs essential to understanding Evans, such as “Waltz For Debby,” “Nardis,” “Autumn Leaves,” “Very Early,” and “My Foolish Heart.” This 4-disc collection, compiling performances from the crucial period of 1965-1966, is a must-see for Bill Evans fans and modern jazz fans alike. Below are the details of each disc as they were at the time of release. Disc 1 This disc features studio rehearsals held at Studio 1 in Copenhagen before Monica’s arrival. The latest AI technology has been fully implemented to achieve a natural colorization that is incomparable to the original black and white footage, and the sound has also been remastered to superb quality. Dressed in a suit and with his hair slicked back, Evans is still handsome and has a clean-shaven face. At the time, Evans’ music was used in films produced in Denmark and other Nordic countries, and he was very popular in Scandinavia. He enlisted Alex Riel, the drummer of the Kenny Drew Trio with whom he had collaborated the previous year, and performed with Gomez in a trio that also served as a charity show for the Danish Red Cross. This live performance at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen on October 24, 1964, is well known from overseas CDs such as “Tempo Di Jazz,” but this release includes a never-before-seen studio rehearsal held in Copenhagen the very next day, the 25th. It features some songs that were not played at the previous day’s live performance, such as “Very Early,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “Five,” played several times on some tracks, making it an extremely interesting recording that will thrill fans! The piano used is a Steinway. Perhaps the pedal was a little malfunctioning at first, as the staff hastily adjusted it. The first half basically proceeds with Evans playing the piano while explaining the key points of each song to the young drummer standing beside him. Studio rehearsal, Studio 1, Copenhagen, Denmark 10/25/1966 1. Introduction / Setting Up 2. Very Early 3. Who Can I Turn To 4. If You Could See Me Know 5. Autumn Leaves 6. Five Bill Evans (p) Eddie Gomez (b) Alex Riel (dr) Disc 2 This 1966 video of the trio with Eddie Gomez and Alex Riel has been fully integrated with the latest AI technology to achieve a natural colorization that is incomparable to previous black and white footage, and the sound has also been remastered to the highest quality. The live performance took place inside an art museum, with paintings displayed at the back of the stage. Unlike a large concert hall, the stage and audience are close together, which I think creates a relaxed atmosphere. The members are Eddie Gomez (bass) and Alex Riel (drums). I think Eddie Gomez has only recently joined the trio, but he’s producing a very powerful sound. Gomez’s bass tends to be unstable at times, but when you see him on video, it’s clear that he’s an extremely visually impressive musician. Bill Evans’ piano playing is delicate and nervous, and Riel’s playing is reminiscent of the European Larry Bunker. OSLO MUNCH MUSEUM, OCTOBER 1966 1. VERY EARLY 2. STELLA BY STARLOGHT 3. IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW 4. AUTUMN LEAVES 5. TIME REMEMBRED 6. NARDIS 7. The first two tracks are performed by the Lee Konitz Trio, with Evans joining in the second half. The selection mainly consists of their usual repertoire, and you can enjoy a performance that showcases the cohesiveness characteristic of trios of this era. Live at Paris Jazz Festival, Paris, France 11/03/1965 1. What’s New 2. All the Things You Are 3. Detour Ahead 4. My Melancholy Baby Disc 4 This recording captures a live broadcast performance from the BBC studios in March 1965. The latest AI technology has been fully implemented to achieve a natural colorization far superior to previous black-and-white footage, and the sound has also been remastered for superb quality. This performance features Evans with his mid-career trio, including bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker. They perform familiar numbers such as “Waltz For Debby,” “Nardis,” “My Foolish Heart,” and “Someday My Prince Will Come.” Live at BBC, London 03/19/1965 1. Five 2.
