From tracks from his ‘Black Messiah’ era to iconic songs like “Brown Sugar” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” and even covers that showcase his funk/rock/soul roots, this approximately 180-minute live collection offers a complete experience. Enjoy D’Angelo’s live performances from the ‘Black Messiah’ era, along with his fusion of funk, soul, and rock influences. This approximately 3-hour 2-DVD set includes important tracks such as “Brown Sugar,” “Really Love,” “The Charade,” and “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” Details of each disc are listed below as they were at the time of release. Disc 1 features professionally shot footage of D’Angelo, the most godlike funky guy of 2015, performing at a Polish festival on July 3rd, 2015. D’Angelo and his latest band, Vanguard, toured festivals around the world in the summer of 2015, and this footage showcases their top-notch, spirited performance. D’Angelo uses his guitar more extensively than ever before, and has invited Jesse Johnson of The Time to join Vanguard on guitar, creating a tear-jerking twin-guitar duet with D’Angelo. He also performs a trick reminiscent of Prince, where he simply shows the number of fingers he holds up, and the band plays the same number of notes, even demanding an astonishing 45 at the end, which the band obliges. You can enjoy sophisticated funk covers and exquisite live arrangements from his latest masterpiece album, Black Messiah, all in professionally shot form. The second half features a club gig at Club Nokia in LA. The audience recording, captured from the side of the stage using a smartphone, is by no means praiseworthy in terms of sound and video quality, and is not a complete recording. However, it includes songs that are not performed in short live shows like festivals, so it is included as a bonus, albeit for reference. You will laugh out loud at D’Angelo’s hesitant singing of “Untitled.” The recording time is 110 minutes, with a menu chapter format. There is only one original song, and it is the rare Great Daynda Manorin’. The rest is a parade of super rare tracks that only serious soul fans would recognize. It is perfect for appreciating the depth of D’Angelo and Questlove’s musical background. And it is even professionally shot! However, he arranges them so well that they sound like his original songs ♪ Although the Funkadelic influence is naturally strong, D’Angelo’s new rock charm in No Head No Backstage Pass is so captivating that you wouldn’t realize it’s a cover unless you’re a huge P-Funk fan. The way it smoothly flows from there into Great Daynda Manorin’ shows that his talent is limitless. The hyper version of Thankful n’ Thoughtful is also amazing. Angelo Moore of Fishbone delivers a Black Flowers performance on vocals and theremin, leaving the audience wondering, “Who? Who? Who?” The show concludes with Prince’s B-side track, “She’s Always In My Hair,” which D’Angelo himself released as a single, but it has a different flavor in a live setting. The bonus track features Eric Leeds on saxophone and Jesse Johnson on guitar, backed by Prince’s crew, playing none other than The Time’s “My Summertime Thang”! He must really love Prince… This video collection best showcases D’Angelo’s love for R&B, funk, and Prince. The video is divided into chapters via a menu and has a running time of 70 minutes.
