Yellowjackets, the premier contemporary jazz group representing L.A. with a history of 45 years, all of whose members were fans of Mike Stern, collaborated with Stern at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2007, and released the masterpiece “Life Cycle.” This rare live performance is now available! ! ! ! The miraculous collaboration that occurred in their heyday was the masterpiece “Life Cycle” by Yellowjackets/Mike Stern. Since both were top musicians with great popularity, the two of them did not tour together, and only performed a few one-off live shows. From this rare live performance, which took place on July 19, 2008 at Gyro Castle in Hungary, we have a powerful album that has been completely recorded over an hour and a half in superb high-quality stereo sound that has been carefully mastered by the label’s own band recording first master! ! ! The concert started with “Stache of Liberty,” followed by “A-Ha” and Stern’s “I Wonder,” from Life Cycle, building to a climax in quick succession. The songs, which were only a few minutes long on the studio version, were all performed for long periods of time on this concert, featuring a theme performed in high-speed unison by Bob Mintzer and Stern, solos that started out as live rhythmic playing, and as the performance heated up, Stern couldn’t help but step on the distortion switch with his foot and turn on the hard switch, Mintzer played a long solo that went on and on and on, and Mintzer’s blowing was not to be outdone, Haslip played an incredible solo with unparalleled virtuosity, Ferrante’s keyboards made full use of their diverse expressiveness, and Marcus Baylor’s powerful drums with their unique groove and technical stick handling.The solos featured were full of solos in which all the members generously showed off all of their abilities, and the ensemble was also excellent, as if Stern had been in the band for a long time. And above all, Stern’s guitar, full of rock spirit, blows a hole in the neat and tidy image of the Yellow Jackets’ sound, and fans will love hearing the exciting Yellow Jackets, stimulating and thrilling.
