Paul McCartney led Wings on its first world tour in 1975. It was only three years after the band had started performing surprise gigs at local universities, but Paul’s talent in growing the band from zero to a global scale is remarkable. Above all, when The Beatles broke up, no one doubted Paul’s success as a solo artist. And what remains the same as in The Beatles is that success in America is equal to success in show business. Paul’s standard was set on the success of an American tour. In 1972, he toured Europe, and in 1973, he toured the UK for the first time. “BAND ON THE RUN” was a hit album, and he also had hit singles such as “My Love”. In May 1975, “Venus And Mars”, recorded with the members who would later tour with him, was released. The single “I’m Not a Girl” reached number one in the US. Perhaps deciding that the time was ripe, Wings embarked on a world tour from 1975 to 1976. Their ultimate goal was success in America. For this reason, careful preparation was necessary. Paul never started a tour in a big city like New York or Los Angeles, but preferred to start in a small city in the country and then move to the center, like Kakuei Tanaka’s election campaign, and this hasn’t changed to this day. Since the scale of the tour was global at this time, they first toured the UK throughout September 1975. In November of the same year, they visited Australia for the first time in 11 years. During this time, they had some trouble with their Japan performance being canceled, but the new Wings was a huge success, receiving cheers everywhere. They attacked the world from the “countryside”, and all that was left was to challenge America. The American tour began on May 3, 1976 in Fort Worth, but if Jimmy hadn’t injured his finger, it would have started in April. Wings’ last stage in 1975 was on November 14 in Melbourne. This will be a gap of about five months. To ensure they are fully prepared, they did a mini tour of only five shows in March just before they left for the US, probably with the intention of getting their playing skills back. The dates are as follows: March 20, 1976 Copenhagen March 21, 1976 Copenhagen March 23, 1976 Berlin March 25, 1976 Rotterdam March 26, 1976 Paris As you can see from the dates, this was just before the American tour, and they did a very busy tour with five shows in just one week to warm up the band’s performance. This album contains two shows from this mini tour, the Copenhagen show on March 21 and the Berlin show on March 23. While there are many recordings of the American tour, there are few titles of this mini European tour, although there are some already released recordings. However, the content is very unusual and interesting, and the stage that is different from the American tour is something that fans cannot miss. Perhaps the maniacs who pick up this work will own some titles from 1975. When the tour started in 1975, “SPEED OF SOUND” had not been released, and the set list did not include songs that would later become highlights, such as “Love Song of the Heart” and “Proof of Love”, and it is known that the stage composition was still in a state of trial and error, with a medley of “Little Woman Love” and “C Moon”, and “Soily” being played in the middle of the stage. It was the same in Australia, and it seemed as if they were searching for the most effective set list and song order, with the single “Junior’s Farm” being played in the second half. “SPEED OF SOUND” was released in March 1976. Normally, Paul would have gained experience in 1975 and then went straight to the United States, but the fact that he released a new album before going to the United States as a final blow shows how much Paul was putting his money on this American tour. “SPEED OF SOUND” produced hits such as “Knock of Happiness” and “Love Song of the Heart”, and also included “Time of Tranquility”, which Denny Laine would sing every time on stage. It is not hard to imagine that they would incorporate songs from the new album into the setlist and play them on stage to increase album sales. However, they had never played any songs from the just-released “SPEED OF SOUND” on the previous year’s tour. So they added “SPEED OF SOUND” to the 1975 setlist to create a new composition, and this mini tour was organized not only to fill the five-month gap, but also as a final check before going to the United States. As you can see, the setlist has changed significantly since 1975. Of course, it was the first time that songs from “SPEED OF SOUND” were played on stage, but what is particularly noteworthy is that “Meddle with That Girl” was played just before the encore. Since Paul was sitting at the piano, this song was played alongside “My Love” in later years in America, but here, after singing “Wine-Colored Girl” on the bass, he moved back to the piano and played “Meddlesome Girl”, which was unusual. Since it was a hit song, it was probably played in this position in the hope of getting the crowd excited. Looking back at the schedule and set list from 1975 to 1976, Paul’s fearsome enthusiasm for success in America is apparent. Starting in 1975, he toured the UK and Europe with a grand run-up to the peak of the world tour (America). To top it off, he released a new album. He added it to the set list and debuted it on a mini tour, making it the highlight of the American tour. Just as “I Want to Hold Your Hand” became a number one hit just before The Beatles first went to America, a hit single was born from “SPEED OF SOUND” as if it was timed to coincide with the Wings tour, and Paul’s talent seems to attract luck as well. The result of such careful consideration of the set list was the highly refined stage of that American tour. This work is a recording of two performances in Copenhagen and Berlin from a mini European tour just before moving to the United States.
