Description

“Tommy,” one of THE WHO’s masterpieces, is also known as an excellent rock opera. It is said that the term “rock opera” itself was coined by Pete Townshend, and THE WHO was indeed a pioneer of rock opera, which blossomed in the 1970s. “Quadrophenia,” released in 1973, was a new rock opera masterpiece that was more difficult and complex than “Tommy.” THE WHO had many twists and turns before “Quadrophenia” was released. In 1972, they started working on a new album, “Lifehouse,” but it was shelved before it was completed, and the project for “Rock is Dead,” which was a remake of that album, was also shelved without being completed. In the end, THE WHO only released two singles in 1972. The WHO ended 1972 incompletely, a busy but fruitless year, and in 1973 they started working on a new album again. Thus, after several miscarriages, “Quadrophenia” was completed. As mentioned above, “Quadrophenia” is a difficult and complicated rock opera, but it is difficult to understand the contents immediately, and a thick liner note and photo booklet that describes the story was included with the release. A tour was held in 1974 to accompany “Quadrophenia”. The tour for “Quadrophenia” was a small one with only 13 performances in six months, divided into three legs: France in February 1974, England in May, and America in June. The change in the set list during the tour is also noteworthy. As you can hear by listening to the album, the sound of this album is tinged with glittering colors that make heavy use of synthesizers. This means that it is difficult to reproduce on stage with a four-person band. So, the idea was initially proposed to record the backing tracks in advance and play along with the tapes on stage. However, problems arose, such as technical issues and timing issues between the tape and the performance, and although many songs from “Quadrophenia” were played at the beginning of the tour, as the tour progressed, the importance of these songs decreased, and in the end only about three songs were played. This work records the concert in Charlton, England on May 18, 1974, which could be called the highlight of this small-scale 1974 tour. The reason why this Charlton performance is the highlight of the tour is that THE WHO appeared as the headliner of a large event called SUMMER OF 1974. The venue was a huge football stadium. With a lineup of cool bands at the time such as Bad Company and Humble Pie, they performed in front of a large crowd that filled the stadium. This work is a set that allows you to enjoy this Charlton performance both as a sound source and a video. [CD] THE WHO’s Charlton performance on May 18, 1974 was a highlight of the tour and an event stage at a huge stadium, so it has been recorded in various forms. Even in terms of sound sources, there are several kinds of soundboard sound sources, including BBC masters, FM broadcast masters, and sound sources accompanying the video. However, although all of them are sound boards, the sound quality is not so good, and the biggest drawback is that they are not completely recorded. And ironically, the sound source that has the best sound quality of the sound sources recorded on this day is the audience sound source, and the only one that is completely recorded is the audience sound source. Therefore, judging from both the content and sound quality, this work is completely recorded with the audience sound source. [DVD] The video on this day was also left as a professional shot, and it has been a famous standard video among collectors for a long time. A long time ago, the program “2nd House” was broadcast as the original material for all the existing titles, but recently about two other sources have been excavated, and the combination of them is now mainstream. However, all sources are incompletely recorded, and although there are songs that are only available in each source, they are basically all the same shot. The sound is basically recorded in mono, but there is a stereo sound source broadcast on FM radio, and there are also some stereo sound images, so it was quite a complicated situation. This work has a high-quality source of the BBC version secretly kept by THE WHO collector, and there are several songs in master quality separately, and they are combined to make it the longest recording. Unfortunately, the complete recording has not yet been excavated, and there are even stories that it does not exist. Also, since the original was a PAL source, there was a lot of noise and the image quality was questionable, but in this work, the image quality is of unprecedented high quality. In terms of content, it is the best and longest, including Pete’s interview and backstage scenes. As for the audio part of the video, it is possible to switch between two types of audio: a video source and a stereo sound source broadcast on FM. [CHARLTON 1974] This work is a set of highlights from the short tour accompanying the album “Quadruple Personality”, the event stage at the huge stadium on May 18, 1974, and the Charlton performance, recorded completely with audience sound sources, and also with a pro-shot video that allows you to switch between two types of sound board sound sources. Because it is a classic sound source and a classic video, I want to keep it in a perfect form, and if you want to play that role, this work would be it. AUDIENCE RECORDING AUDIO DISC DISC ONE 01.
