Description
The Who, who released the critically acclaimed album “WHO” at the end of 2019, were originally supposed to tour the album in 2020. However, as you know, all plans were scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why the long-awaited tour around the world has been going on since the end of April under the title “THE WHO HITS BACK”. Roger Daltrey is now 78 years old and Pete Townshend is 76 (almost 77), and we are grateful that they decided to resume live performances during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s only natural that even non-enthusiasts would want to hear about such a latest tour. So this time we will release the latest live performance held in Austin on May 3rd. On this day, both the audience recording and the video appeared, and both were of good quality. If that’s the case, we can’t help but couple them. First of all, the audience recording has a really great sound quality, and you can listen to it carefully with just the right distance and clarity. Although it is not the same as the recording condition described as “like a sound board,” the performance is clearly captured and the sense of realism is good. The live performance begins with an excerpt from “TOMMY,” with songs from each era in between, and ends with an excerpt from “QUADROPHENIA,” which is easy to understand and innovative. Also, at the “TEENAGE CANCER TRUST” stage held before the start of the tour, Jody Linscott played rhythm instead of Zach Starkey, who was on honeymoon, but here Zach returns. As always, he supports the band with his wonderful drumming that respects Keith Moon. Furthermore, Pete focuses on rhythm play for the “TOMMY” part, just like on the 1989 tour, and his brother and long-time supporter Simon plays lead guitar. Pete also plays lead from “Who Are You?”, showing that he is still full of rock. The video of the audience on the same day was shot from a fairly front row position, and although there is no close-up, the image quality is super clear with an excellent angle that allows you to see the expressions of the members on stage. When the “TOMMY” part begins, Roger is seen holding a tambourine in both hands, and his old actions such as turning the microphone explode from the beginning of the live. In this way, Pete’s main Strat is not in good condition during the “TOMMY” part, and he changes to a sub red Strat halfway through, which is a feeling of trial and error that is unique to the first half of the tour. However, it is also nice to see Pete playing the guitar lively from “Who Are You?” onwards. What is surprising is that the reaction of the audience to this song, and even to later numbers such as “Eminence Front”, is very enthusiastic. Perhaps encouraged by such a good reaction, Pete finally uses his family heirloom “windmill playing” at the end of the live “5.15”. Seeing them like this makes us look forward to how the tour will evolve. This is the first release from their latest tour and it’s already set to become a classic!
