Description

This is a recording of two days of the Forest Hills, New York performance from THE WHO’s North American tour in 1971. Just before the release of THE WHO’s representative album “WHO’S NEXT”, the first and second days of the US performance, when THE WHO was at their peak, have been reborn as a long-awaited new mastering CD! The performance on July 29th, the first day of the tour, recorded on discs 1 and 2, has a typical analog-like outdoor live recording (monaural audience recording) of the time, which is dumpling-shaped and fluffy, but the performance is captured very close, and the bass range is quite powerful. It is a distinctive recording that allows you to experience the explosive sound even when listening at normal volume, and with such a powerful sound, you might be worried about distortion due to level overshooting, but perhaps the level setting at the time of recording was appropriate for this sound source, and miraculously it held up at the very limit, so you can enjoy the powerful sound from start to finish without any unpleasant distortion. Moreover, the vocals, guitar, and drums are surprisingly well-balanced, even though they are fluffy, and there is not much chatter from the nearby audience, so some people may have the illusion of listening to the performance in front of the amplifier at the venue or on the side of the stage. According to the literature, the start of the performance on the first day was delayed due to bad weather, and they put rubber pads on the soles of their shoes to prevent electric shock. However, here they deliver an overwhelming performance that does not make you feel such adverse conditions at all. The way they rush from Love Ain’t For Keeping (unfortunately cut in) to Pure And Easy is different from the one you can hear on the official album “WHO’S NEXT -DELUXE EDITION”, and it is sure to give you goosebumps. There are cuts in the songs Substitute, Behind blue Eyes, Pinball Wizard, and See Me, Feel Me, but they seem insignificant, and the performance is so overwhelming throughout that it never gets boring. Discs 3 and 4 contain the second day of the Forest Hills performance on July 31, one day after the first day. Like the first day’s recording, it is a mono audience recording, but in contrast to the first day’s recording, it is a high-quality recording that can be said to be of excellent master quality with very clear and crisp sound for the time and excellent resolution of each instrument (I Don’t Even Know Myself, Magic Bus have one cut each). This recording was released as a mega-rare analog record “SUCH A KNIGHT” (WK23), but the author has never seen it in person. Nowadays, the live performance at the Young Vic Theatre in April 1971 has been recorded on “WHO’S NEXT – DELUXE EDITION”, so it has become familiar to us, but until then, the live performance flowing from Love Ain’t For Keeping to Pure And Easy was only available on this vintage analog record, and even now, there are very few titles on CD with live recordings of this pattern, so the fact that it is packaged again in the form of a press record like this will be a great feeling for fans of the past who were engrossed in the little information they had at the time, such as HOT WAX magazine. Also, in terms of the actual live performance record, when “WHO’S NEXT” was released in the United States in mid-August, Pure And Easy, which was not included on the album, was immediately removed from the live set list, and although Love Ain’t For Keeping, which is included in the album, remained on the set list for a while, it was also removed shortly after, so it is a high-point item in that you can listen to these songs that are not often played. On the second day, there was a guitar problem during the Pure And Easy guitar solo, and the sound suddenly disappeared, which resulted in a slightly longer irregular version in the middle (it’s interesting that Roger Daltrey returns to vocals strangely abruptly), and after playing Behind Blue Eyes, the loop sound of Won’t Get Fooled Again was accidentally played for a moment, and perhaps because of this, the intro when playing Won’t Get Fooled Again was different from usual, and the loop sound suddenly cut in without the “do-do-do” count, and so on. It was a live performance with many small troubles, but it is also one of the highlights. And perhaps to relieve those frustrations or to close the Forest Hills 2DAYS, there was a guitar crash at the end of the live, and even more unusually, there was a bass crash by John Entwistle, and the raw sound and the applause of the audience (?) were also captured well.
