Description

The 1975 tour, which began with the album “THE WHO BY NUMBERS,” a perfect fit for the word “good work,” arrived in the United States at the end of November. From there, a number of masterpieces have already been released from the tour that took place over the course of a month. There is a sense that good quality audiences are concentrated in the December leg, such as the immortal masterpiece “PROVIDENCE 1975,” Dan Lampinski’s famous recording “SPRINGFIELD 1975,” and more recently “CINCINNATI 1975,” but this time we are releasing a performance on December 1st, which can be said to be the starting point of such a month! The stage was the Kemper Arena in Kansas City. The sound quality of the first appearance sound source that captured the stage on this day is really wonderful. The items from December 1975 mentioned above tended to have a sound image that felt more or less distant, but the sound source this time is very close to those. Although it is a stereo audience from 1975, it is not quite at the level of being described as “like a soundboard”, but the recording quality is still quite close and overwhelmingly easy to listen to. To speak of how easy it is to listen to, it is to the point that you can count how many times Keith Moon’s bass drum, the backbone of The Who’s live sound, is stepped on in the song (laughs). In the first place, his drumming, which hardly uses hi-hats, was at its peak, so it is so fascinating to see Keith’s unique playing explode. It reminds you once again that he was a unique drummer. Thanks to such unique sound quality, it is vividly conveyed that Keith was in top form that day and pulling the band. In short, it may be that he was blown away in a good way (bitter smile), but even so, his presence on this day was overwhelming. On the contrary, Pete was overwhelmed by Keith? There were many scenes that made you think that. And yet, the band’s ensemble does not go out of control like the items recorded in Cincinnati and after a week later, which sounds fresh, making it a very interesting sound source. This atmosphere is most evident in “Squeeze Box”. When the tour started in Europe in October, it was treated as the third song to be played at live performances, and this was the same on this day. However, at this point, it had not yet been refined as a repertoire, and it had the freshness of a newly released song, which was clearly different from the performance that praised the strength after Cincinnati. By the following year, the band had evolved to play with complete confidence, and Roger had even encouraged the audience to sing along, so the careful performance here seemed even more fresh. The fact that Keith was the main character on this day became more prominent as the live performance progressed, and it was also impressive that “Magic Bus”, which had been a high-tension performance for free, was played by him with a sense of speed that was even more impressive than usual. This point is also strikingly different from the performance after Cincinnati, where the performance has become heavier. The highlight of Keith’s performance is “Fiddle About,” in which he is the lead vocalist in the shortened “TOMMY” corner. On this day, he was making that strange noise even before the performance started, and once it started, it was already Keith’s stage. It’s a song that he goes wild with all his might, but on this day, he was wild in a different league. He showed off his best performance not only in the performance but also in the spotlight. However, after the “TOMMY” corner, Pete also showed his true colors by leading the band with ad-libs after the medley development of “My Generation.” The development that leads from a very quiet and melancholic ad-lib to the intense finale “Won’t Get Fooled Again” is magnificent. However, there was a slight skip in the song after about 7 minutes, and the maniac who uploaded this sound source patched the YouTube version, which I will mention later, so that it could be heard without any discomfort. And since it boasts top-class sound quality among the 1975 tour audience, it was already on YouTube 10 years ago and was easy to listen to. However, the sound quality of this one is clearly better. Rather, the pitch was considerably lower than the YouTube version, so it was adjusted firmly to be suitable for release. It is also tailored to be in a state where you can hear Keith in top form. Above all, it is amazing that such a powerful and superb audience has not been released until now!
