Description

The Who, who released the album “Quadrophenia”, began their tour in late October, starting with their native England. It was not just a live tour, but in order to reproduce the concept of the album on stage, they even introduced a large-scale and ambitious setup, such as installing four-channel speakers at the venue. Therefore, the schedule was short, including the US leg, but as Pete wrote in his autobiography, it was difficult to realize with the technology of the time, and especially in the US, it was performed without being installed. The final day of such an ambitious 1973 tour ended with a return to England and four consecutive nights in Edmonton, north of London. There is an audience recording of the final day of this consecutive performance, which was recorded with amazing quality for the time. However, until “My Wife”, Pete’s guitar sound was unusually loud, and the sound pressure like a soundboard was intense. However, the recording fell into mono, and perhaps the recorder himself felt that this was not good… There are some unsettled parts from “Summertime Blues” to “My Wife”. However, thanks to the change in position, the sound quality was upgraded to an amazing stereo sound quality from the “Quadrophenia” part! As mentioned earlier, a four-channel speaker setup was attempted on this tour, especially at the British theater. It seems that it was successfully installed in Edmonton, London, and it was thanks to the four-channel speakers that the “Quadrophenia” part of this sound source was recorded with a wonderful stereo balance. In other words, it seems that the person who recorded it was in front of Pete’s speaker until “My Wife”, which is why the sound image was so close to the explosion and fell into mono. Therefore, rather than being at the front of the venue, the person who recorded it could have moved to a position just right between the four speakers. It is true that the texture of the recording itself is rough with a vintage feel, but the ease of listening created by this wonderful stereo recording and the closeness of the sound image is bound to attract attention, and it is also a nostalgic sound source for enthusiasts who were released on the Golden Stars CD version of that mysterious jacket “MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. WHO VOL.1 & 2”. Moreover, the release was made after a tearful edit in which “My Wife” was cut and the two mono songs were placed at the end of “VOL.2”. We obtained the audience recording master cassette of this nostalgic masterpiece. Needless to say, it is a major upgrade from the “MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. WHO VOL.1 & 2” which is out of sync and pitch-deranged. The pitch deviation occurred at the master stage, and this time it has been properly adjusted. In addition, the difference in the extension of the high notes is clear compared to the Golden Stars version. This is truly unique to the master. Even so, the closeness of the sound image throughout the whole album, and the shocking stereo feeling created by the “Quadruple Personality” part are truly wonderful. In addition, since it was the final day of the tour, the high-tension performance where all the members gave their all is captured with a magnificent stereo feeling. Compared to that turbulent American tour, the relaxed performance is clearly conveyed. And since “Quadrophenia” itself was popular among British fans at the time, the excitement of the “Quadrophenia” part is amazing. The rich realism is also captured in vivid stereo, and the stereo vintage audience of “MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. WHO VOL.1 & 2”, which was a hidden masterpiece of the 1973 tour among enthusiasts, has achieved a major upgrade from the master. This is a release that will make enthusiasts go wild! Edmonton Sundown, London, England 23rd December 1973 TRULY PERFECT/ULTIMATE SOUND (from Original Masters) UPGRADE & LONGER..AMAZING STEREO MASTER!!! Disc:1 (78:37) ★The first three songs were recorded in front of Pete’s amp on the four-channel speaker set up at the venue. The guitar is recorded on more than I’ve ever heard before, which is overwhelming. 1. I Can’t Explain 2. Summertime Blues 3. My Wife ★The recording position moves from here. The sound conveys that the taper is in a hurry. Until “My Wife”, Pete’s guitar sound is unusually loud, and the sound pressure is intense like a soundboard. However, it fell into a mono state, and perhaps the recorder himself felt that this was not good… There are some restless parts from “Summertime Blues” to “My Wife”. However, thanks to the change of position, the “Quadrophenia” part has been upgraded to an amazing stereo sound quality! On this tour, especially in the British theater, a four-channel speaker setting was attempted. It seems that it was installed well in Edmonton, London, and it was thanks to the four-channel speaker that the “Quadrophenia” part of this sound source was recorded with a wonderful stereo balance. In other words, it seems that Pete was in front of the speaker until “My Wife”, which is why the sound image was close to that explosion and fell into mono. Therefore, rather than being at the front of the venue, the recorder could have moved to a position just right for the four speakers. 4. The Real Me 5. The Punk and the Godfather 6.
