Description

Compared to their contemporaries, the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, The Who’s BBC radio appearances were not so numerous, with the total volume fitting on two CDs. The official “BBC SESSIONS” was a compilation of overlapping songs, interviews, and appearances recorded in karaoke (album version with live vocals) around 1969, all stripped down. However, the official release was well aware that it would not be comprehensive, and a limited edition with an extra disc was released overseas. Thus, it seems that the official release of The Who’s BBC in 2000 was enough to satisfy the public, and since then, there has been no item that covers all of their BBC performances. This is a serious situation in a different sense from the Stones, who finally had their official release in 2017. So “Prof. Stoned” stepped up to cover the Who’s BBC recordings. As with the Stones, which was released at the same time, “Prof. Stoned” also thoroughly examined the existing broadcast discs and tape recordings of the Who. It was not only the contents of the recordings, but also a stunning new generation of Who’s BBC live culmination that wiped out past items in every sense. Now that more than 20 years have passed since the official release of 2000, there are many things to point out, but first of all, the incomplete recording state seen in some songs. For example, the cover of “Good Lovin'” started with the song suddenly, but in fact there was a proper intro. This was because the narration was overlapping with the intro, and they disliked that state, but this state was not limited to the official one, but it was a dilemma from the time of Hiwatt’s (=Scorpio) “MAXIMUM BBC”, which was considered a masterpiece of the Who’s BBC culmination before that. However, this time, by re-recording from the original broadcast disc, it was finally possible to achieve a complete recording from the original intro. What was also strange about all the past items was that “Pictures Of Lily”, which had been recorded with the intro cut even though the narration was not overlapping, was finally recorded in its entirety. Let’s say that this version alone can renew the best of the BBC compilation. And above all, the sound quality. The official release was in 2000, when the CD mastering battle was in full swing, so it is undeniable that it sounds like an intrusive finish now. In that respect, “Prof. Stoned” has a much more natural and refreshing sound quality due to the straightforward recording from the broadcast disc. For example, if you compare it with “Substitute”, the difference is clear. Not only the intro problem mentioned earlier, but the sound quality was also recorded with the original BBC sound quality. Not only these obvious differences, but also “Prof. Stoned”‘s commitment to the contents of the recording explodes. The 1965 tracks “Baby Don’t You Do It” and “You Rang?”, whose masters are not available at the BBC, are recorded from air check sources circulating among enthusiasts. The sound quality is not good, as if the broadcast at that time was picked up from a radio speaker, but these are very valuable first-time sound sources, so they cannot be ignored. The two mixes of “Pictures Of Lily”, which show differences in the volume of John Entwistle’s bass, are also thoroughly covered. The content and sound quality are now so rich that they cannot be compared to the 2000 release, and it can finally be called a true culmination of The Who’s BBC live performances that enthusiasts can be satisfied with. The editing content, which fits well on two discs, is also magnificent, and the ease of listening, which is divided into Disc-1, which is essentially the early Who, mainly R&B covers, and Disc-2, which is the golden age when the group finally showed its true potential, is also a great display of the skill unique to “Prof. Stoned”. Above all, the sound quality of each performance is truly excellent due to the thorough re-recording of the original sound source.
