Description

Legendary taper Mike Millard was more proactive in recording The Who’s live performances in LA in June 1980 than in the 1970s when Keith Moon was alive. It’s a fact that’s overlooked now, but The Who’s popularity in America was at its peak in 1980, and they even appeared on the cover of Time magazine. That’s why they were able to hold consecutive performances in the LA area, and the best sound quality of the performance at the Sports Arena on June 23rd was the best, and the limited press CD of the masterpiece “LOS ANGELES 1980 1ST NIGHT” is still a bestseller today. The sound quality of the LA Forum held three days earlier was not as good as that of the 23rd, but it was still a very hot performance, so it was released as “L.A. FORUM 1980 1ST NIGHT: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES”, which has also been highly praised by enthusiasts. And this time, JEMS released the recording at the Sports Arena on the 24th, that is, the day after “LOS ANGELES 1980 1ST NIGHT”. However, this time the sound image and recording level were unstable immediately after the start of the live performance, and the sound image had a unique depth. However. This “unique depth of sound image” is a huge attraction. Here, Pete’s guitar sound is captured with incredible closeness, as if it was picking up the sound coming out of the amplifier. Moreover, the sound of his guitar is never saturated (never!), and it is an impactful mirrored recording that captures Pete’s sound with a vivid balance. In the first place, Pete was captured playing on “LOS ANGELES 1980 1ST NIGHT”, but since it was the second day, his guitar on this day was already crisp. This explosive play was captured as a live sound from the amplifier. Listening to the recording balance this time, for example, in “My Wife”, you can see how Pete plays a rich backing with only one guitar ensemble, which gives you goosebumps. Furthermore, since it has been a year since the band started its activities after Kenny Jones joined, the feeling of uncertainty from the previous year has been wiped away, and Pete’s stirring up of Kenny with his guitar is vividly captured. In particular, the improvisational development from the second half of “Pinball Wizard” as if he had awakened is spectacular. He pulls the band more than the day before, and there is no time to breathe until the main part of the live ends with “See Me, Feel Me”. During the encore, Pete’s momentum is already out of control. The performance continues almost non-stop from “Magic Bus”, and Kenny is keeping up with Pete’s wildness. All of the Miller recordings of The Who’s LA performances in 1980 that have been released so far have been more than enough to dispel preconceptions about the Kenny era, but this time Pete’s rampage is even more amazing!
