Description

A Norse magician has crossed the Atlantic! The “magician” of course refers to Per Erik. In recent years, he is a recording artist who has been making a series of masterpiece recordings from the late 1980s. I don’t know what his purpose was, but he moved to America in 1990. The magician who landed in the home of metal demonstrated his magic even in the tremor of the movement. That is the new masterpiece of WHITESNAKE recording, “SLIP IN LAGUNA HILLS”! Speaking of Per Erik’s “SLIP OF THE TONGUE tour”, “SLIP OF THE GLOBE”, which was released the other day and received a reputation as “one of the best on tour”, comes to mind, but this work also has an audience of no less. Great recording. Compared to “SLIP OF THE GLOBE”, which recorded Metal Snake’s true power with its powerful bass, this work is better in “subtlety” than “power”, and you can clearly hear the shaking of Steve Vai’s wah effect. . There is no chatter or noise in the sound, and the dazzling brilliance of WHITESNAKE is fully contained, and in terms of “clearness”, it even surpasses “SLIP OF THE GLOBE”! Really, how many masterpieces did the magician record…? The live performance, which you can listen to with its powerful sound, is so enthusiastic that you can’t help but groan, “As expected from the real thing.” “SLIP OF THE GLOBE” was the “next live” of the Donington performance, which was also made official, and was recorded in August at the end of the tour (White Snake disbanded in September). On the other hand, this work was recorded in California in May during the middle of the tour. (I don’t really like that word, but) This is a live show held by WHITESNAKE, the symbol of hair metal at its peak, in the center of hair metal, so the excitement is nothing short of amazing. If such a live performance were recorded normally, it would be filled with the uproar of the audience, but while the world’s best enthusiasm is clearly transmitted, it does not go beyond the direction and does not interfere with the musical sound. I don’t know how intentional Per Erik himself was, but he is a “magician” because he captures the flavor of each venue and the recording itself speaks eloquently. Moreover, the musical tone is wonderful. In particular, the power of Coverdale, who screams hyper, is unprecedented. “LA CROSSE 1987”, which was released at the same time, was full of awesomeness that recorded the peak of the vocalist’s life, but in terms of powerful momentum, this album, which is full of confidence, wins the prize. It’s not just Coverdale. Vai’s virtuosity is a given, but the way he interacts with Coverdale’s less-than-elegant MC with a talking guitar is also very Vai-like. Adrian Vandenberg also has a fierce rivalry with Vi, and his spirit is clearly different from when Vivian Campbell was his partner. Perhaps it was during this period that Adrian played the most passionately in his life. The amazing thing about “Crying In The Rain” is that the two of them, who played with the most force throughout their careers, put their all into it! A powerful performance by the famous John Sykes. Now that I think about it, it was the best time to be able to perform as an ensemble with the new lineup that welcomed Vai, and not feel tired from the long schedule. This sense of fulfillment may also be natural. Listening to this, I think that the “SLIP OF THE TONGUE tour” was “overdone” after all. After all, all the sounds you hear are excessively loud. However, what is the meaning of “repressed rock”? If you think about it, the old classic Snake was also overflowing with a passion for “rocking as hard as they could” (even if the sound they heard was bitter). By the time he formed Shiroja, choosing to be a singer in a rock band rather than a male soloist, Coverdale was on his way to “rock more!” Metal Snake, which was reborn with Vi, still maintains that same aesthetic. In that sense, WHITESNAKE hasn’t changed at all. In Japan, the image of “deep taste” and “bitter vocals” prevails, but in English-speaking countries, the band proudly uses the “symbol of white men” in their band name. “Tough masculinity” has not changed in the slightest since the blues-rock era, to the extent that military operations have become a theme. (The blues and masculinity are inseparable.) After this, WHITESNAKE got tired of being “more powerful” and changed direction to “more bitter”. Immediately before that, a famous recording that captures the brilliance of the “Spirit of the White Snake” that was on the verge of burning out since its formation.
