Description
The soundboard album, called the pinnacle of the John Sykes era, has been brushed up. A CD with high-definition mastering by “GRAF ZEPPELIN” has been born! This work is engraved with the “January 19, 1985 Rio de Janeiro performance”. It is a soundboard recording recorded at the legendary “First RIOCK IN RIO”. At that time, WHITESNAKE was a time when British rock veterans gathered together and were undergoing intense member changes. First, let’s check the position of the show from the panoramic view of the “SLIDE IT IN” era. 1984 {January 30th “SLIDE IT IN (UK Mix)” released} February 17th – April 5th: Europe #1a (28 shows) {April 7th: Mel Garret injured} April 8th – 16th: Europe #1b (6 shows) {April 16th “SLIDE IT IN (US Mix)” released / Jon Lord leaves the band} June 30th: Appearance at ST. GALLEN FESTIVAL July 17th – 30th: North America #1 (8 shows) ←※DEFINITIVE SPOKANE August 4th – 16th: Japan (8 shows) ←※SUPER ROCK ’84 September 12th – November 30th: North America #2 (53 shows) 1985 January 11th + 19th: ROCK IN RIO appearance (2 shows) ←★Here★《Cozy Powell leaves the band》This is WHITESNAKE in 1984/1985. Initially, they started the tour with 6 people, just like the album, but as time went on, Mel Galley and Jon Lord left. By early summer, they had 4 people. After that, they participated in Japan’s Super Rock ’84, and also took on a tough US tour as an opening act for DIO and QUIET RIOT. And after the end of that tour, they participated in “ROCK IN RIO” as a special performance. Two performances were held in one collection, and this work is a live album that records the second performance. Also, at that time, Cozy Powell, whose relationship had already collapsed, had announced his withdrawal, and he participated after knowing that it was the last stage. Such a show is also known for the fact that a TV broadcast pro shot was left behind, but this work is a different FM soundboard sound source. This is the complete version that includes “Don’t Break My Heart Again” and “We Wish You Well” that were cut from the TV broadcast, and the sound also transcends the TV broadcast. In particular, the masterpiece “ROCK IN RIO ’85 (Langley-299)” has reigned as the best master. This work is the highest peak update of that best master, polished by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. In fact, the sound is the best ever. “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering is not a flashy decoration of the original sound, but a method to improve the accuracy of pitch / phase adjustment and noise processing. Although there was no discomfort in the pitch or phase last time, it has been adjusted more strictly. Because of the method, the difference can be difficult to understand, but this time, a different difference was born at a glance. The most obvious thing is the punch of the bass, and the bass and bass drum are much stronger. Although the conventional version was clear, the attack was weak, and the sound was blurred and not tight. However, in this work, the sharp attack is clear and the outline is tight. In particular, Cozy is described as “drumming like smacking a drum can”, so the sharpness is very important. To avoid any misunderstanding, I will repeat that this is a different dimension from just making the sound powerful. The adjustment is based on the concept of “reproducing the sound of the band”, and the band adjustment is applied from high to low tones. As a result, it is only the bass that is easy to hear and the difference appears. Such a powerful sound depicts a full show where the strongest four “Cavadale / Sykes / Powell / Murray” compete against each other. Currently, when it comes to live albums from the four-person era, the standard is “SNAKESKIN BOOTS” in the official work “LIVE IN ’84: BACK TO THE BONE”, so let’s organize the contents while comparing them here. Slide It In (4 songs) Guilty Of Love / Love Ain’t No Stranger / Slow An’ Easy / Slide It In (★) Classic Snake (5 songs) Snakebite: (Ain’t No Love) In The Heart Of The City (★) Love Hunter: Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues Fool For Your Loving: Ready An’ Willing Come And Get It: Don’t Break My Heart Again (★) Saints and Sinners: Crying In The Rain *Note: The “★” mark indicates a song that cannot be heard on the official “SNAKESKIN BOOTS”. … and so on. Although it is impossible to say for sure that the official “SNAKESKIN BOOTS” is uncredited, it is also said to be roughly “Spokane performance on July 24th”. This work also allows you to enjoy the three songs that could not be heard there. In particular, “Don’t Break My Heart Again” was a song that was cut from the TV broadcast on the same day. In addition to the full show, this work also contains two more delicious bonus tracks. The first is “Stereo Mix Digest”. The FM broadcast was a fairly mono sound board, but recently a vivid stereo sound source was also unearthed. However, only a digest of each song edited for about 9 minutes has been released, not the whole show yet. Here, we have recorded it as a digest in hopes of discovering the full version in the future. The second is the music program “WHISTLE TEST”. Unlike the full broadcast, it only includes “Love Ain’t No Stranger” and an interview with Coverdale, but this interview is surprisingly interesting. Cozy’s departure is also mentioned, and when the interviewer asks “This is his last concert, isn’t it?” Coverdale replies, “It’s really unfortunate.” It sounds normal when written down, but in real life it sounds over the top, and you can’t help but want to say, “You don’t really think that, do you?” He also asked, “I heard you’re going to be the producer of ELP,” and he replied, bursting out laughing, “We’ve both decided to walk different paths, but I wish him the best of luck.” It’s a very innocent social comment, but even here, the nuances of his true feelings shine through because it’s a live voice. The four-member era, when they had the strongest lineup but many opening shows. “ROCK IN RIO” is not a full set alone because it’s a festival, but the charm of enjoying the strongest ensemble for about an hour is irreplaceable. This work is a piece that brings out the best of that pleasure with the high-definition mastering of “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. The best soundboard recording of “January 19, 1985 RIO IN RIO (2nd performance)”. This is a complete FM broadcast soundboard that also includes “Don’t Break My Heart Again”, which was cut from the TV broadcast. The best masters, once unearthed from the Langley label, have been carefully mastered by GRAF ZEPPELIN. The pitch/phase accuracy has been improved, and the bass has been brightened by adjusting the band width, making it dynamic. In addition, the official quality stereo sound source (about 8 minutes digest) and the separate broadcast version of “Love Ain’t No Stranger” are also included as bonuses. This is the definitive live album that features the final performance of Sykes/Cosey/Murray in the highest quality.
