Description

WHITE LION, a legendary band from the late 80s that was enjoying its heyday as a fleeting phenomenon, is getting two live albums released simultaneously, offering an unparalleled experience of their performances! This is the first of two consecutive releases, featuring a powerful audience recording of their Toronto concert on July 7, 1987. 1987 was the year they achieved their breakthrough with the massive hit “PRIDE,” and classic albums like “MARQUEE 1988” and “RITZ 1988” have also become beloved staples. So, where does this album fit in all of that? Let’s start by taking a look at their activities at the time and see how they relate to each other. 1987 – March 6th + May 10th: Warm-up (release of ‘PRIDE’ on June 21st) – June 20th – July 28th: North America # (28 shows) ←★HERE★ – September 6th – December 30th: North America #2 (34 shows) 1988 – January 19th – February 2nd: Europe (11 shows) ←※MARQUEE 1988 – February 11th – September 10th: North America #3 (115 shows) ←※RITZ 1988 – September 18th: Japan (Showcase) ←※TOKYO 1988 – September 27th – October 29th: North America #4 (24 shows) – November 26th: Jersey Shore show This newly unearthed recording captures the breakthrough with immense power. This is WHITE LION in 1987/1988. This Toronto concert took place about two weeks after the release of “PRIDE.” It was the 12th concert of their “North America #1” tour. It was released simultaneously with “TORONTO 1989,” which has a similar title, and is actually a sister work in terms of content. It is a previously unreleased recording from the same recording engineer’s collection. This recording is a scorching hot audience recording. The sound of the performance is incredibly thick and powerful. There is no sense of distance whatsoever, and the sound pressure comes crashing in with tremendous force. In fact, there are moments when Mike Tramp’s vocals are slightly over-peaked because it is so powerful, but it is Vito Bratta’s skill that cuts through it. The combination of the two main performers is captured with a power that surpasses even a soundboard recording, and it couldn’t be bad. It is not the type of recording that melts you with beauty, but it is a recording in which the momentum of reaching their peak is also palpable in the sound. A highly concentrated stage that could be called a live performance version of PRIDE. This extremely thick, powerful sound captures the rising stage that was gaining momentum with the release of “PRIDE.” As mentioned earlier, this tour is symbolized by our store’s soundboard masterpiece “RITZ 1988,” but this set is similar yet different. Let’s compare and organize them here. The setlist is as follows: The Magnificent Rebellion (2 songs) – Fight To Survive / Kid Of 1000 Faces (★) Pride (7 songs) – Hungry / Wait / Sweet Little Lovin’ / Don’t Give Up / Tell Me / Lady of the Valley / All You Need Is Rock ‘n’ Roll *Note: The “★” mark indicates songs that were not heard on the soundboard masterpiece “RITZ 1988.” …and so on. On this day, they were the opening act for FREHLEY’S COMET, so it was a short set. In their approximately 46-minute set, they generously played 7 of the 10 songs from “PRIDE,” and inserted 2 songs from “FIGHT TO SURVIVE.” It was an intense and scorching hot stage performance that elevated their masterpiece “PRIDE” to a higher level in terms of stage tension. This live album, resurrected from a newly discovered original cassette tape, captures the 1987 performance of White Lion at the height of their momentum following the breakthrough success of “PRIDE.” Experience their raw energy in this powerful, thick-sounding live album. This is a powerful audience recording of their Toronto performance on July 7, 1987. This previously unreleased recording, sourced from the newly discovered original cassette, is a companion piece to the simultaneously released “TORONTO 1989,” recorded by the same recording engineer. With a powerful sound that completely eliminates any sense of distance, you can fully experience the stage performance that is essentially a “live version of PRIDE.” Rock ‘N Roll Heaven, Toronto, ON, Canada 7th July 1987 (45:32) 01.
