Description

“LIVE AID” is the biggest music event of the 20th century, which has been introduced in numerous live albums and video titles. Approximately 15 hours of live broadcasting took place here in Japan. A transcendental series that has made the complete master version into DVD has been decided to be released! [Complete recording master finally discovered] You may be thinking “LIVE AID again?”, but this time it is the ultimate. At that time, a complete version master of the Japanese broadcast that was aired in real time was discovered. Although we have introduced the Japanese broadcast version so far, it has only been edited with a focus on live scenes with outside sauce. We received an unprecedented response, and one core enthusiast offered to say, “Here’s a tape of all the recordings.” They provided us with 8 VHS tapes that recorded the entire 15 hours of live broadcasts, including Japanese studio talks and nostalgic commercials. Moreover, it is not only a complete recording, but the quality is also top-notch. It seems that it has not been released for 34 years since then, and there are no dubbing marks or deterioration over time. Depending on the tape, there may be some deterioration noise at the beginning and end, but other than that, the video is of official quality. It was of such perfect quality that it made me wonder, “Was it released on laser disc at that time?” There is no way to leave such a treasured tape alone. These eight VHS tapes were digitized into one DVD each. A full release of 2 discs x 4 titles has been decided. So, this series has volumes from “VOL.1” to “VOL.8”, but this work is a set of the first two “VOL.1 & 2”. Let’s organize by the performing artists/bands you’re interested in. [DISC 1: VOL.1] ○20:01/STATUS QUO ○20:19/THE STYLE COUNCIL ○20:44/THE BOOMTOWN RATS (Satellite broadcast of MEN AT WORK) ○21:17/ULTRAVOX [DISC 2: VOL .2] ★22:01/Joan Baez (B.B. King satellite broadcast)★22:45/Billy Ocean★22:55/BLACK SABBATH ○22:07/Elvis Costello ○23:18/Sting & Phil Collins★22:32/FOUR TOPS *Note: “○” is Wembley Stadium in the UK, “★” is JFK Stadium in the US. The numbers are the start times of the show, Japan time. *However, there is a discrepancy between Japanese broadcasting and local broadcasting, and in Japan it is approximately “DISC 1 = 21:00-23:00” and “DISC 2 = 23:00-1:00″. [Studio talk getting more and more serious from moment to moment] …And so it goes like this. The four-hour period from 9:00 p.m. on July 13, 1985, when the broadcast started, to 1:00 a.m., when the date changed, was recorded. I’ve already introduced the live content and the fun of Nippon Broadcasting’s unique subtitles and simultaneous interpretation many times, so I’ll omit that, but this time I’ll introduce you to the real-time feel that includes studio talk, commercials, and even news. After all, from the beginning, it says, “Well, in 3 minutes, the 15-hour live broadcast of “THE Earth CONCERT”, a charity concert to relieve hunger in Africa, will begin.” It’s not “LIVE AID”, it’s “THE Earth CONCERT”, and there are “3 minutes left” until that legendary event. This real-time feeling is overwhelming. Well, actually, while the UK show started at 20:00, this program started at 21:00. It started an hour ago, not “three minutes later,” but the simple, easy-going way it was played was typical of those days. When the actual performance begins, the destructive power is even greater. The late Itsumi○takashi, who had no knowledge of Western music, struggled to connect the scene, and Minami Kosetsu was still active today, exclaiming, “The Beatles are reuniting” and “I heard that Michael Jackson is on his way!” When a certain female announcer was asked about her favorite artist, she paused and said, “…”. When talking about the 70,000 people who gathered at Wembley, Yu Saya, who had just graduated from high school, was asked, “That’s amazing. I wonder if everyone is interested in music?” but she honestly replied, “It’s natural, isn’t it?” He becomes speechless and tries to translate for a black chorus group, but he is unable to translate and froze. What’s even more amazing is the mood that grows more urgent from moment to moment. It is now a well-known story, but even though most of the viewers of this live broadcast were Western music fans, since it was a prime-time commercial broadcast, the Japanese artists’ performances were distorted, and the clunky studio talk was extremely unpopular. Even though the live performance was progressing moment by moment on the back screen, the entertainers kept repeating stupid comments, saying, “THE STYLE COUNCIL has just finished.” Of course, broadcast stations were flooded with complaints, demanding that they show live Western music. The mood in the studio, which was initially tense, gradually became more urgent, and they were forced to apologize and make excuses. It’s vivid, so let’s write it down. Female announcer: “We are the ones who are hated the most tonight.” Masaru Itsumi: “That’s right. I’d like to explain this to you all for a moment, but it’s actually a live broadcast, um, from London. But of course, in Philadelphia, there was a change of musicians, so I took advantage of that time to connect. I apologize.” Even now, when I watch it, I cut it off in the middle of the song. “I often say this while watching the news,” but there’s no way announcers have any editorial rights, and there’s no way they can make complaints like “I don’t care about celebrities!” It’s a poignant yet interesting look at the TV industry’s power games to squeeze in talent during prime time, and the studio’s lack of understanding of Western music. Finally, in between commercials, a message is suddenly inserted saying, “Please don’t worry about the members who could not be shown during the news.We will deliver it on VTR later. Please look forward to it.” How fierce was the protest that day? How much more intense did it become as time passed? This is also one of the real pleasures that you can enjoy because of this work. [Late night news that brings out the “summer of 1985”] And the late night news is even more intense, revealing not only the real-time feel of events but also the sense of the era of “1985.” The top news features Prime Minister Nakasone and President Mitterrand discussing Gorbachev and SDI. Next up is the Glico Morinaga incident! Nowadays, the statute of limitations has expired and it has become a complete crime, but at that time it was the year after it occurred. It was also important that the typewriter used was identified. Of course, the last section is about sports, but the highlight of the day was the Giants vs. Hanshin match. The topic is that there were 7 home runs, but the batters were Hara, Kawano, Cromartie, and Nakahata… Even in casual game results, the Hankyu Braves and Kintetsu Buffaloes still exist, the BayStars are the Yokohama Taiyo Whales, and the Hawks are not only Daiei but Nankai. A news program that talks about things that have long since become part of history, with images included. That in itself is interesting, but the point is that it is broadcast mixed with the live footage of the legendary LIVE AID. You can vividly experience “Japan in 1985”, which cannot be conveyed by editing only live scenes like before. Finally, we also have to apologize to everyone. The master unearthed this time was a complete recording of 15 hours of live broadcast, but this work had to be cut only a little. There are many performances by Japanese artists. During this time, Yazawa○kichi’s “Bitter Rain” and “Take It Time”, Checker○’s “Jagged Heart’s Lullaby”, Loud○s’s “Gotta Fight”, Offcoss’s “Endless Night”, and Sano○haru’s “Shame” by Minami Kou. Unique versions of works such as “Kaze wo Kurate” and Kiyoshi Imawano’s “Working People” were being broadcast. Each performance was wonderful, and while the background had an atmosphere reminiscent of “Best○n” or “Night Hits○Geo,” the unique set of “LIVE AID” was elaborate. The gap between Wembley and JFK Stadium is also an interesting masterpiece scene, but unfortunately I will not be able to show it to you (I hope the time will come when I can show it to you…). That said, we recorded the scenes that we could show to the fullest, sparing even one second. It is the best recorded video not only of historic British and American live performances, but also news that evokes the sense of the times in 1985 and studio talk unique to that time. When viewed through eight long works, “that day” vividly comes back to life. The first part. ★Uses 8 beautiful standard recording VHS tapes provided by enthusiasts. The performance scenes of the 22 Japanese artists were unavoidably cut. Everything else is recorded from beginning to end.
