Description
The Dutch music festival “KRALINGEN MUSIC FESTIVAL 1970” was said to be “Europe’s answer to Woodstock.” The cult movie “STAMPING GROUND” depicting the scene of the legendary festival has been decided to be released. This show was held in “Rotterdam from June 26th to 28th, 1970”. It was an outdoor festival that was held about two months after the Isle of Wight Festival, and attracted a large audience of over 100,000 people. Like Woodstock, this festival was filmed and made into a movie by director Georges Schluitzer (also known for “Dark Blood” starring River Phoenix). It has been loved as a cult masterpiece that depicts the turbulent 1970s. This work is the pinnacle version of such a legendary concert film. This is a reprint from the Japanese DVD that went out of print soon after its release. The biggest highlight of this work is, of course, the valuable live scene. The headliner was PINK FLOYD, who appeared during the production of “Atom Heart Mother,” but there were many other delicious performers as well. First, let’s organize the lineup. British (3 groups/4 songs)・PINK FLOYD: Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun/A Saucerful Of Secrets・Marc Bolan & T.REX: By The Light Of The Magical Moon・FAMILY: Drowned In Wine・Al・Stewart: Zero She Flies American group (9 groups/14 songs) ・SANTANA: Gumbo/Jingo/Savor ・JEFFERSON AIRPLANE: Saturday Afternoon/White Rabbit/Ballad Of You And Me And Pooneil ・CANNED HEAT: Human Condition/So Sad ( The World’s In A Triangle)・IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY: Wasted Union Blues/Open Your Hearts・THE BYRDS – Old Blue・Dr. John: Mardi Gras Day・Country Joe: Freedom Is A Constant Struggle・FLOCK – Big Bird Official Unknown Song…and it looks like this. This work is an edited documentary film, so it is not divided by band, nor is it in the actual order of appearance. And the content is special. SANTANA and T.REX, who have just made their debut, FAMILY led by Roger Chapman, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and CANNED HEAT, who also participated in Woodstock, IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY, which is familiar to DEEP PURPLE fans, etc. There weren’t many British people there, probably because there was the Isle of Wight Festival just before, but you could see plenty of British and American bands that were representative of the time. Each song is a hidden treasure, but what is even more impressive is the scenery that reflects the times. A huge crowd gathered in a vast space similar to Woodstock, and each and every one of them was extremely free. Lying in the field, enjoying the sun and music, dancing half-naked. The scenes from the time when Love & Peace still had a sense of reality are vividly depicted. Moreover, the Netherlands is a big place. By this time, a policy of tolerance towards marijuana had begun, and the audience at the venue could be seen openly sulking. Apparently there were undercover police officers at the scene, but no one was arrested for drugs, including the dealer. IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY suddenly turns that mood into something suspicious. During their performance, the weather turns suspicious. Dark clouds gather, thunder rolls, and gusts of wind blow. Although it seems that the storm did not last long, this is an unusually realistic document of such a mood. And the highlight is definitely PINK FLOYD. The film is a little reddish, but the psychedelic songs “Hymn to the Sun” and “Mystery” are played with plenty of realism. You can see Nick Mason’s mustache and Richard Wright’s fingertips up close, as well as Roger Waters’ intoxicating expression and Dave Gilmour’s barking mouth. This festival was held 14 months before their first visit to Japan, and it was as if the sights of Hakone had appeared before their eyes. In 1970, people believed that music could change the world, and rock was quietly transforming from the power of young people to a business. This is a masterpiece of a cult film that conveys the flavor of that era. If Woodstock is an American scene, this film is a European scene. A piece that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the scenery of the era imagined from the memories of musicians for an hour and a half.
