Description

Mick Ronson is suddenly attracting attention as the documentary film “Beside Bowie” approaches its release in Japan. Introducing the finest stereo soundboard album of the memorial event “THE MICK RONSON MEMORIAL CONCERT” to remember him. This event was held at the Hammersmith Apollo on April 29, 1994, the first anniversary of Mick’s death. Musicians who were close friends with Mick during his lifetime gathered together for a session. The lineup is truly luxurious. Ian Hunter, Roger Daltrey, Steve Hurley, Bill Wyman, Glenn Matlock, Roger Taylor of QUEEN, Mick Jones of THE CLASH, Gary Brooker of PROCOL HARUM, Joe Elliott and Phil Collen of DEF LEPPARD And so on… It was a major event that became the epitome of British rock. [The longest 3-disc set in history, lasting about 3 hours] That pattern was also released as an official live album, but this work is different from that. This show was recorded by the prestigious BBC, and will be broadcast on FM on April 30th, the day after the show. This work is the broadcast master. The difference in size is the length. In fact, the official work was intended to be released as a 2-CD set, and was a compilation of selected songs from each artist. However, this work is the broadcast itself. It also includes the full songs that were cut on the official edition. Here, let’s summarize the composition of this work and the musicians included. ●Disc 1・THE RATS (2 songs) *Officially unrecorded song “I Feel Free”・THE DANA GILLESPIE BLUES BAND (2 songs) *Officially unrecorded song “Be My Sugar”・GLEN MATLOCK AND THE MAVERICKS (3 songs) *Officially unrecorded songs “My Man” and “Take The Long Ride”・BIG AUDIO (2 songs) *Officially unrecorded songs “Rush”・Gary Brooker (1 song) ●Disc 2・WILLY AND THE POOR BOYS (2 songs) ) *Officially unrecorded songs “High School Confidential”・THE SPIDERS FROM MARS (7 songs)・Steve Hurley (2 songs) ●Disc 3・Roger Taylor (1 song)・Roger Daltrey (2 songs)・Ian・Hunter (4 songs)…and it looks like this. It contains 28 songs from 11 groups, 6 of which can’t be heard on the official edition. In fact, a broadcast version that covers these songs is also available on the internet, but this work is even longer than that. This is a complete recording master of the program that was saved for this work by overseas core enthusiasts, and includes interviews with the performers from the opening of the program, a moving speech by Mick’s sister Maggie Ronson, and even Mick’s voice that is played at the ending. Until “Life’s a River (studio version)”. The program is recorded from beginning to end. It is more than 20 minutes longer than the online sound source. This is surprisingly important. In fact, Mick’s songs are played at this event, but most of the time the musicians are performing their own songs and standards. As a result, the music alone sounds like a compilation of live takes. However, by including interviews and speeches that express feelings for Mick, the mourning mood becomes much stronger, and a special sense of unity is created for the night. [Real document written with unprocessed sound] The vivid sound is also exquisite. Joe Elliott had remixed it on the official version, but this work is as it is on the spot. Since it was broadcast the day after the show, the BBC broadcast it without any editing. Of course, since it is the BBC of the world, there is no fault in the recording, and I can call it “official grade” without hesitation, but the sound is far more natural and has a lot of on-site feel than the actual official version, which has been modified in various ways. . For these tribute events, the most important thing is the atmosphere on the day and the scene, rather than the refinement of the musical work. In that sense, this work is a much heavier recording. The complete version that has been revived is truly the best. The show starts with THE RATS, who were in the 60’s, and continues with Dana Gillespie, Glenn Matlock & THE MAVERICKS, and BIG AUDIO, who were closely related to Ziggy. Then, towards the middle of the song, a rare collaboration appears. When Gary Brooker sings “Blue Shadow,” Bill Wyman and Andy Fairweather Rowe appear. They will perform two songs under the name WILLY AND THE POOR BOYS, which seems to be taken from the title of CCR. And after that, the show gets heated all at once. Following Maggie’s speech, THE SPIDERS FROM MARS appears. Unfortunately, Bowie is not participating, but Joe Elliott will take the microphone instead. Although Mick’s solo numbers such as “Don’t Look Down” and “Angel No. 9” sung by Joe are also played on the album, the main one is naturally Bowie. They will be playing famous songs such as “The Width of a Circle,” “Ziggy Stardust,” “Moonage Daydream,” “White Light/White Heat,” and “Suffragette City.” I can’t help but think of the movie Ziggy Stardust. After all, the venue is the Hammersmith stage where Ziggy’s end was announced 21 years ago. Each song is so heavy that the real-sound document feeling digs into your heart. Steve Hurley, Roger Taylor, Ian Hunter, and Roger Daltrey appeared towards the end. The repertoire of COCKNEY REBEL, QUEEN, and THE WHO makes things exciting, but it’s Ian who really stands out. Mick’s face appears in “Once Bitten Twice Shy”, and the urgent singing voice of “Michael Picasso” written as a memorial permeates. And then there was the big finale of “All The Young Dudes” where all-stars gathered around Ian. Here too, the movie “Ziggy Stardust” comes to mind, the live album “WELCOME TO THE CLUB” comes to mind, and the scene of the Freddie memorial concert comes back to life. That melody flashes back to Mick standing beside Bowie and Ian and playing the guitar. The album ends with “Life’s a River”, played by Mick himself on the guitar. The wide range of performers is also a testament to the breadth of Mick’s friendships, and we realize how much he was loved by many musicians and was at the center of the British rock scene. This is a definitive stereo soundboard album that allows you to enjoy such a special night over a period of about 3 hours, the longest in history, with the sound of the scene itself.
