Description

British rock legend John Heisman passed away last year. A superb original recording of a special performance commemorating him is now available. Heisman passed away on June 12, 2018. He formed his last band, JCM, with COLOSSEUM’s allies Clem Clemson and Mark Clark and toured, but was hospitalized due to a brain tumor. The surgery was not worth it and he never returned home. JCM’s tour “IN MEMORY OF JON HISEMAN” has been announced since this April, but this work is a special performance held before that. This is a tribute concert held on February 2, 2019 in London. This show consists of five major parts. Heisman’s daughter Anne Gracie performed solo, his wife Barbara Thompson performed PARAPHERNALIA, JCM, session VARIATIONS, and COLOSSEUM. This work is a 2-disc audience recording that records 3 stages other than Anne and PARAPPERNALIA. First, let’s organize the show and the composition of this work. ・ANA GRACEY ・BARBARA THOMPSON’S PARAPHERNALIA ・[Disc 1] JCM ・[Disc 1] VARIATIONS (Clemson) ・[Disc 2] COLOSSEUM … and so on. The recording of Ann and Barbara’s stage was postponed because celebrities did not participate, but the important stages of JCM, VARIATIONS, and COLOSSEUM can be fully enjoyed. The sound of this work is also superb. The thick, thick core is right in front of your eyes, and the details are super clear. Although its vividness can be called “just like a soundboard”, the venue acoustics are beautifully colored and you can notice it when you listen carefully with headphones, and it may be more appropriate to say “it feels like you were sitting in the rehearsal room.” It is a famous recording full of such high sound quality and closed room feeling. It’s no surprise that it ended up sounding like that. In our store, it is a recording by a master who is well known as a “British master”. What’s more, the traditional venue “Shepherd’s Bush Empire” is truly a master’s garden. They have produced many masterpieces, but when introducing this work, we cannot avoid COLOSSEUM’s “THE LAST CONCERT: SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE 2015”. As the title suggests, it was a masterpiece that let you enjoy COLOSSEUM’s last show with the best sound, but this work is also its sequel. [Disc 1: JCM] The show drawn with such a sound seems to celebrate the trajectory of the Heisman. The film opens with a speech by his son Marcus and his wife Barbara, and JCM appears with an introduction from Pete Brown. The band’s name was the initials of John Clem Mark, but instead of Heisman, it was Ralph Salmins who sat on the stool. He is the drummer for THE WATERBOYS, but he is also known for his collaborations with other great artists such as Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and James Brown. He will also be participating in “IN MEMORY OF JON HISEMAN,” and his drumming skills and range are amazing. Of course, there is no one who can replace Heisman… The set consists of songs from his posthumous album “HEROES”. In the first place, “HEROES” was an album that reprinted famous songs related to the Heisman, so it could be a tribute to his glorious career. All songs except “Yeah Yeah Yeah” are performed in almost the same order as the album, with the bonus tracks “Grease The Wheels” and “The Inquisition” inserted. Most of the songs are performed by the new trio, but Don Airey, formerly of COLOSSEUM II, also participates in the last two songs, “Rivers” and “The Inquisition.” [Disc 1: VARIATIONS] Following JCM is “VARIATIONS”, a session in which Clemson & Ailey also performs with THE NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA. The main character here is Andrew Lloyd Webber, who does not actually participate in the performance. He is a great composer who is also famous for the musicals “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Cats”, and “The Phantom of the Opera”, but his 1978 work “VARIATIONS” includes not only Heisman and Barbara, but also Ailey, Gary Moore, A great lineup of people including Phil Collins and Rod Argent were in attendance. In this section, Webber first appeared with a video message praising Heisman’s accomplishments. Then, I will play “Theme (Paganini Caprice In A Minor No. 24) And Variations 1-4” that was included in “VARIATIONS”. This session is more about Heisman’s diverse career than the fun of rock/jazz performances. [Disc 2: COLOSSEUM] And finally, the favorite is COLOSSEUM. However, rather than a reunion, it is a special formation for this day only. In addition to Clemson & Clark, a total of 11 people performed, including former members James Litherland and Tony Reeves, his son Billy Thompson, Don Airey, and GENTLE GIANT’s Malcolm Maltimore. Backing them up will be Chris Farlow, Anne Gracie, and Gert Lang of HAMBURG BLUES BAND will also be joining in on vocals. The show centered around their early signature songs “Elegy,” “Walking In The Park,” and “Theme From An Imaginary Western,” while also performing “Morning Story” and “Blues to Music,” which were included in their final album “TIME ON OUR SIDE.” . There will also be blues covers such as THE BLUESBREAKERS’ “No Reply” and the standard “Stormy Monday Blues”. The Heisman’s career comes back to mind with each song, but the highlight is the drum solo that lasts over 10 minutes. It is Heisman himself who is hitting the harsh and vivid solos. In fact, at this time, a live video of the 1994 performance in Cologne was being played in the venue, and at the end, a passionate live performance of “Lost Angeles” was added, and the venue went wild. The moment when the Heisman’s music is being inherited is moving, as you realize the magnitude of what has been lost in the tremendous and colorful drumming. Finally, one more aside. As mentioned earlier, this work is also a sequel to COLOSSEUM’s final work “THE LAST CONCERT”. However, there is one more masterpiece that I would like to introduce to you. That is JCM’s masterpiece “MILTON KEYNES 2018 (Uxbridge 829)”. Although the venue is different, this is also the work of a “British master” and is a live album that records the band’s passionate performance at the end of the Heisman. What’s more, the JCM show has a strong tone of being the final conclusion of Heisman’s career. Although it is impossible to say for sure when he found out about his brain tumor, the passionate performance in which he finished the performance with his own hands is very touching. COLOSSEUM’s “THE LAST CONCERT”, JCM’s “MILTON KEYNES 2018”, and this work. I would like you to enjoy it as a trilogy. A wonderful memorial performance by Heisman-related musicians. This is a live album that allows you to be present at the scene with the best sound. This work alone is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, and it’s even more profound when you get a taste of Heisman’s history in the trilogy. This is a monumental masterpiece that should be seen by all who loved the British rock heavyweights.
