Description

The official video collection, which has a strong smell of 27 years ago, is reprinted with the highest quality ever. This work is a DVD version of the Japanese laser disc of the charity project “ROCK AID ARMENIA”. The best part is the strong sense of the era and the gorgeous video clips, but let’s start with the basics… This project started with the Armenian earthquake in December 1988. It was a major disaster with 25,000 deaths and 400,000 evacuees, but the heavyweights of the rock world rose up to help the victims. Not only this project, but the music world in the 1980s was full of charity projects. This project appeared at the end of the charity boom, with BAND AID (1984) to help those suffering from the Ethiopian famine, USA FOR AFRICA (1985), which had the huge hit “We Are the World”, LIVE AID (1985), the largest charity concert in Japan, HEAR ‘N AID (1986), and the Moscow Music Peace Festival, which supported the anti-drug campaign in the former Soviet Union. The highlight of this project was a cover of DEEP PURPLE’s “Smoke On The Water” by a luxurious group of musicians. In addition to the main single, a compilation album of participating artists, a video clip collection, and a production documentary video were released. This work is a collection of clips by participating artists. At the time, it was mainly distributed on VHS, but this work has been meticulously digitized from the laser disc version released in Japan. Our shop has reproduced many out-of-print videos from laser discs, and this work is exactly the same process. The highest quality ever achieved by making full use of the “mint record” treasured by core enthusiasts and the “high-end environment” of an overseas specialist manufacturer. With its top image quality and sound quality, you can watch 15 songs by bands/musicians who agreed with the project, and a video clip of the newly recorded version of “Smoke On The Water ’90”. Well, that’s the basics. Now, let’s get to the main topic. First, the clips of 15 participating artists continue, and the lineup is amazing. There are North American artists such as BON JOVI, FOREIGNER, and RUSH, but the main focus is on the British Empire. A large number of super-big bands from the HR/HM and progressive genres appear. The point is the sense of the era. Some of them pull out old footage like EL&P and LED ZEPPELIN, but ASIA, MIKE AND THE MECHANICS, and THE FIRM, who shone in the 80s, appear, and the big name bands are not classics, but a large number of 80s clips are introduced to appeal to their activeness. DEEP PURPLE chose “Perfect Strangers”, GENESIS chose “Mama”, and PINK FLOYD chose “One Slip”. The lineup of bands brings to mind the heroic figures of the 70s, but the footage is from the thoroughly glamorous 80s. It’s not the scene that fans want most, but it’s a collection of footage that will make you feel nostalgic… For example, YES. Although their classic song “I’ve Seen All Good People” is included, the version is a live clip of “90125 YES”. Trevor Rabin in a modern art-style T-shirt, John Anderson in a shady, pajama-like outfit. The ultimate is Chris Squire, with his hairstyle almost like Sting’s, and a mysterious costume with a hose like a Zaku pipe on his shoulder. If they are mysterious, the video processing that shows them is also mysterious. A ray of light from an animation that seems to say “It’s a spotlight” is drawn, and a number of childish processes that I would rather call “computer graphics” rather than “CG” are layered on top. People from the 1940s, who are probably symbolic of “Good People”, also appear, but the dilemma that the members and the video itself are outdated sends shivers down my spine. It’s almost a retro-future feeling like a classic science fiction movie. Another one would be GARY MOORE’s “After The War”. A young man who makes you want to say “Who are you?” suddenly appears refreshingly, but suddenly his hair is shaved and he joins the US Army. I understand that it is a production because of the theme of the song “anti-war”, but perhaps “long hair (= rock) being cut” expresses the tragedy of war!?!? Moreover, this young man hardly interacts with Gary after that, and the gap between his passionate performance and Gary who plays with Cozy Powell is amazing. Even though the 80s were a time of mass production of video clips, couldn’t they have done a bit better? It’s a scene that makes me smile, not sure if I’m smiling bitterly or fondly. The main character, “Smoke On The Water ’90,” closes the clips. As with “We Are The World” and “Stars,” the heavyweights of the heavyweights appear one after another. Just to name a few… In addition to the originators Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore, the rhythm section is Chris Squire and Roger Taylor. Vocals include Bryan Adams, Paul Rodgers, and Bruce Dickinson. Guitars include Dave Gilmour, Tony Iommi, Alex Lifeson, and Brian May. Keyboards include Keith Emerson and Geoff Downes. In addition, although they don’t appear on screen, Jon Lord and John Paul Jones also participate in the backing. It’s not just a luxurious collection of famous people, but a lineup of stars that Japanese people will like, as if it were a Japanese project. The gorgeous “Smoke On The Water” is a song where they layer sounds one after another. Unlike “We Are The World” and “Stars”, it is not a new song dedicated to them, so the feature level is somewhat low, but it is still strong for us who are imbued with each individuality. Richie’s riff rides on Keith’s synth, and while Gilmour and Alex’s guitars sound at the same time, Rogers’ lustrous beautiful voice flows out. At the time, Dickinson was said (by some) to be “the best in the world when it comes to singing Gillan”, but when you actually duet with the original Gillan, you can see that it’s not so (lol), and on the other hand, Iommi’s solo, who played this song during the BLACK SABBATH era, is a hit. Among them, if you had to choose MVP, it would be Brian May. Even among the fierce warriors who are famous for their super individuality and are famous all over the world, May’s sound shines above the rest. It’s not that “you can tell who it is with one sound” but the intensity of “making you forget about others with one sound”. He is not just “May of QUEEN”, but is probably the greatest guitarist in human history, on par with Jimi Hendrix. In any case, it is an intense and unparalleled 5 minutes and 10 seconds rarely seen in rock history. Each clip exudes the scent of the era, and the 77 minutes leading up to the unparalleled “Smoke On The Water ’90” are packed with the 80s of our beloved heroes.
