Description

Footage from the 1979 “MIDNIGHT SPECIAL” featuring Brian May as the main guest has finally surfaced! This episode served as a promotion for their latest album, “L.A. (Light Album),” which was released at the time. True to their style, the Beach Boys started with “Good Vibrations,” and were treated like big stars, with their entire live formation, including their support members, being recorded. However, what they really wanted to promote was their new album. Moreover, the music world was in the midst of a disco craze at the time, so they were supposed to perform a disco remake of “Here Comes The Night” from “L.A. (Light Album)”…but since they hadn’t planned to perform this version live, they simply lip-synced. Furthermore, Brian seemed to have nothing to do and stepped back, while Dennis only half-heartedly tapped the cymbal. Even more interesting is “Angel Come Home,” a track from the new album. This is an extremely rare scene showcasing Dennis’s vocal performance, but since it wasn’t planned to be performed live, he’s lip-syncing, and Al Jardine is even lip-syncing with a tambourine instead of a guitar, miming backing vocals—a truly rare formation. Although it’s lip-synced, this is rare footage of Dennis at the front, and it’s been available on YouTube before, but the picture quality is incomparably clearer now. The Beach Boys scenes alone are full of highlights, but the other performers are also incredibly impressive. McGuinn, Clark & Hillman, whose performance was essentially a Byrds reunion, perform not only their hit “Don’t You Write Her Off” but also “Surrender to Me” and “Backstage Pass,” with all three members’ songs performed equally and with live instruments, which is truly precious. McGuinn also joins the Beach Boys on stage to perform “Rock ‘n’ Roll Music,” and here, even the host Wolfman Jack joins in, and Brian May plays bass—another rare scene that will keep you glued to the screen. What makes this episode even more interesting is that the other performers are the disco group Tavares and Blondie, two groups at opposite ends of the spectrum. While these are separate recordings with no interaction with the Beach Boys, Deborah Harry’s confident stage presence, including her signature “Heart of Glass,” and her frequent direct eye contact with the camera, showcases her peak popularity. Interspersed among these live scenes are two Bad Company tracks. Both are live promotional films from the release of ‘DESOLATION ANGELS’ and not recorded within the program, but “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy” even includes Carl’s introduction. As you can see, the Beach Boys alone offer plenty of rare moments, capturing the presence of Brian and Dennis. On top of that, McGuinn, Clark & Hillman, Bad Company, and Blondie all make appearances—a truly star-studded broadcast in perfect picture quality.
