Description
This is a huge volume of 240 minutes! This is a two-disc set that allows you to enjoy plenty of Motown-related footage. It’s great that all of the footage has Japanese subtitles. First up is Ready Steady Go, which could be called the 1965 Motown Revue. This is a very artistic video in which Dusty Springfield was involved in planning and composing it. It’s a great piece that shows how popular Motown was in the UK. This is the time when the Supremes finally started to have a string of hits, and Diana Ross is wonderful, but Florence Ballard, who died at the young age of 32 from a coronary artery thrombosis, is cute. Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (how wonderful the new song “Ooo Baby Baby” is!) and Marvin Gaye are also featured prominently. The Supremes participate in the chorus in the last song, “Mickey’s Monkey,” and 15-year-old Stevie Wonder’s harmonica is also featured, allowing you to enjoy his genius. And then there was the Motown 25th Anniversary Concert in 1983, “Motown 25”. It was the biggest concert in black music, held at a time when MCA was buying the label, and it was a tumultuous time. Berry Gordy also made a comeback, and it was an amazing event where all the big stars from Motown came together. It is also famous for Michael Jackson reuniting the Jackson Five for one night only. Michael singing “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “I’ll Be There” with Jermaine. And even though it was a place to perform hit songs, not new songs, Michael performed “Billie Jean”, and his first moonwalk there is legendary. The MCs of the performers, the narration of comedians such as Richard Pryor and Billy Cosby, and the chatter of Motown composers are all subtitled, so you can understand and enjoy them. The lyrics are also subtitled, so you can really understand what the two groups, the Four Tops and the Temps, are singing each other’s hit songs. Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On” is a great emotional hit, and Lionel Richie’s “You Mean More To Me” will make you cry. It will probably tell you the answer to what the Motown sound is. It will also tell you about the Motown songs that didn’t sell a single. DeBarge and Hi-Energy’s performance is also rare. There is a delightful duet between Smokey Robinson and Linda Ronstadt, and at the end, Diana Ross & The Supremes are back (the members of Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong in their golden age, but later Diana and Mary fell out and this was the only time this happened), and the scene where Smokey, Michael, Marvin, Stevie, and even Berry Gordy go on stage to sing “Someday We’ll Be Together” is just overwhelming. And it includes excerpts of Motown-related footage from the event “Return To The Apollo” held in 1985 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Theater. As you can see from the set list, we will never again see such amazing musical greats gathered together in one place…If you are a music fan, this is a must see.
