Description

The latest in the popular series of reprints of out-of-print footage is Uli Jon Roth. This work is a Jimi Hendrix tribute work “THE SPIRIT OF JIMI HENDRIX LIVE IN CONCERT”. This concert took place in Cologne on April 25, 1991. Uli’s career had a “lost decade” from the dissolution of ELECTRIC SUN in 1986 to his solo resumption in 1995, and this work is right in the middle of that. This video was known as a video in which the sage who had been hiding in the clouds showed his face a little. Although it was broadcast on television and bootlegs were circulated at the time, it was officially released as a software in 1994. However, it was never digitized after that and disappeared into the darkness of history. This work was reprinted from a Japanese laser disc, which is known for its highest quality among the software released. As with the previous series, the original was a mint quality disc that had been treasured by a domestic core collector, and it was digitized in a high-end environment by an overseas analog video specialist manufacturer. The beauty of the images is worthy of being declared the “best ever” once again. The editing is rough because it was originally recorded on television more than a quarter century ago, but the beauty of the images is the exact opposite of cheap editing. The image quality exceeds the VHS standard, the movement is smooth, and the glossy texture with zero degradation and noise is the sole domain of laser discs. Even in this digital age, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery without a single cloud. And the live performance depicted with that quality is full of the flavor of a genius guitarist in his prime. As the title suggests, this show is dedicated to Jimi Hendrix, and all the songs are covers of Jimi’s songs. Even the last song, “Atlantis,” is an improvisation based on Woodstock’s “Villanova Junction Blues.” It’s not the classical and grand world that Uri is known for, but that’s why the sharpness of “guitarist: Uri” stands out so clearly. With Sky Guitar’s flagship model, the 5th model “DESTINY”, in hand, he will play soaring phrases to the fullest. The musicians surrounding Uri are also luxurious. In addition to Michael Flecksig, the partner of his younger brother Gino Roth, British heavyweights such as Simon Phillips, Jack Bruce, and John Wetton participated. Jack, Wetton, and Simon’s rhythm section are great, but Wetton also sings on “All Along The Watchtower”, and Jack also sings on “Spanish Castle Magic”, “One Rainy Wish”, “The Wind Cries Mary”, and “Angel”. In particular, Jack was a rival of Jimi’s EXPERIENCE in CREAM. The “60’s mood” that drifts only because of him and Uri’s guitar, which seems to be possessed by Jimi’s soul, are intertwined… you can enjoy a performance that is different from ordinary Jimi tributes. Of course, Flexig is extremely skilled, and Russian female singer Jules Nigel also sings sexily. If it were Jimi’s song, Uri himself would be allowed to sing it, but by leaving it to the famous singers, the whole show becomes colorful and the beauty of the sky guitar is further enhanced. Also, the song selection is very Uri-like. Uri respects Jimi’s entire career, but his theory is that “Jimi blossomed after ‘AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE'”. In fact, this work also has a lot of later works, centered on ‘AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE’ and ‘ELECTRIC LADYLAND’, and only three songs from ‘ARE YOU EXPERIENCED’. It is a set of particular attention to detail, not even including “Foxy Lady” or “Hey Joe”, which are usually indispensable. Another guitarist/singer, Randy Hansen, is more “possessed by Jimi” than Uri. You’d think there was a black guy dressed just like Jimi, but he’s actually white. He’s painted black like Rats & Star. If it was Japanese music for Japanese people, it would be one thing, but if a foreigner did something like this, it would be met with great criticism, but the guitar of the possession level silences such voices. He even copied the sounds that Jimi made accidentally, and his spirit oozed from his vocals and performance and overflowed from the screen. This strange possession overwhelmed even Uli. In the songs where he appears in full view, even Uli played the backing as if to pay his respects. Uli Jon Roth, along with Robin Trower and Frank Marino, is one of the most representative Jimi followers. This is a piece that revives the official video in which his “feelings for Jimi Hendrix” exploded, with the highest quality ever. A masterpiece with a sky guitar of the soul.
