Description
Michael Schenker to Paul Chapman. Introducing a masterpiece live album set where you can experience the biggest turning point of UFO during its heyday. This work includes two performances from the US tour accompanying “OBSESSION”. This is a two-disc set containing masterpiece audience recordings of “October 29, 1978 Palo Alto performance” and “December 15, 1978 Boston performance”. The former guitar player is Michael Schenker, and the latter one after Paul Chapman was replaced, but what kind of positions do they play? Let’s check the schedule at that time.・January 19th – February 25th: UK #1 (22 performances) ・June 14th – 20th: UK #2a (7 performances)《”OBSESSION” released on June 21st》 ・June 21st – July 3: UK #2b (12 performances) July 12-October 29: North America #1 (58 performances) ←★DISC 1★《October 29: Schenker leaves → Chapman returns》・November 30th – December 16th: North America #2 (11 performances) ←★DISC 2★ This is UFO in 1978. Schenker disappeared during the US tour, but the Palo Alto performance of this work DISC 1 is exactly the last show. And, DISC 2’s Boston performance was the second to last concert of the tour after Chapman was replaced. Now, let’s introduce each one individually. [DISC 1: Schenker’s last night in Palo Alto] First up is a famous recording that has been loved by enthusiasts for a long time. This is a valuable audio recording of Schenker’s last show. Moreover, the sound is also quite good. In fact, the vocals are a bit recessed and balanced, so I can’t say it’s “superlative!”, but the most important part, the Flying V, is superlative! The core, which has no sense of distance, reaches straight like a laser beam, and the outline and details are crisp and clear. You can feel the nuances of picking right down to the angle of the pick, and even slight bending can be seen as the way the strings are pushed up. I think the person listening to this recording is probably looking for Schenker 100%, but this is a guitar recording that 120% meets their expectations. What is depicted with that sound is truly a historic show. “Pack It Up (And Go)”, which cannot be heard even on the expanded “STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT” remastered version, may be the point, but more than that, the fact that it is the last performance in the 70s is heavy. Every song, every riff, every phrase is overflowing with historical weight. [DISC 2: Super famous recording of the final US tour in Boston] Next comes the famous recording of the Boston performance, which was the final US tour even after Paul Chapman was replaced. This is a new master who was discovered recently, but this one is the best, no questions asked! Like DISC 1, it features a very thick guitar, but that’s not all. Phil Mogg’s wet voice and Paul Raymond’s keyboard are similarly captured without any sense of distance, and the balance is exquisite. In particular, the bass of Pete Way, who passed away the other day, has a clear attack and a rich groove. That is the direct sound that is so well-equipped that you will think, “Isn’t this an FM broadcast sound board?” The show that can be described as “Chapman’s version of STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT” is drawn with its superb sound. Let’s organize the set along with DISC 1 here. Phenomenon (2 songs, 4 takes), common to both performances: Doctor Doctor/Rock Bottom Force It (1 song), DISC 2 only: Mother Mary New Murderous Intent (3 songs, 5 takes), common to both performances: Love To Love / Too Hot To Handle・DISC 1 only: Lights Out Space Conquest (4 songs, 7 takes)・Common to both performances: Hot ‘n’ Ready/Cherry/Only You Can Rock Me・DISC 1 only: Pack It Up (And Go ) (★) *Note: Songs marked with “★” cannot be heard in “STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT”. …and it looks like this. Basically, all the songs can be heard on “STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT”, but DISC 2 is all Chapman versions. When it comes to live performances from the Chapman era, the official album “REGENERATOR” is the standard, but there are five songs that can’t be heard there: “Hot ‘n’ Ready,” “Cherry,” “Mother Mary,” “Doctor Doctor,” and “Rock Bottom.” ”, you can enjoy it to the fullest. Moreover, the ensemble is also really good. As expected, it is not on a level that surpasses Schenker or not, but although it is orthodox, there is no discomfort in its hot playing, and its compatibility with UFO is also outstanding. In particular, the combination with Pete is exquisite, and the bass line full of singing intertwines with Chapman’s melody like counterpoint, and the riffs are synchronized. Although this work has only performed 10 performances since Chapman rejoined, it is already clear that they have a good compatibility like brothers. This is a live set where you can enjoy UFO by two guitarists in the same US tour and almost the same set in the latter half of 1978, which was a historic turning point. This is also a luxury that can be enjoyed because it is an audience recording, and it is a pleasure that you can meet because you are an enthusiast. A rare 2-disc set where you can experience Schenker’s final brilliance and Chapman’s passionate performance that succeeded him.
