Description
UFO once faced the prospect of disbanding, but resurfaced in 1985 after discovering Atomic Tommy M. Introducing a must-have collection that includes the peak live record. There are two performances included in this work. This is a 2-disc set with the full audience recording of the “Norwich performance on November 15, 1985” on disk 1, and the out-of-print official pro shot of the “Oxford performance on November 28, 1985” on disk 2. Speaking of the Tommy M era, it was a unique point in the history of UFOs that had a charm unlike any other. First of all, let’s check the position of the show from the overview of its activities. 1984《December: UFO restart》・December 8th-22nd: UK #1 (13 performances) 1985・May 26th: HEAVY SOUND FESTIVAL appearance・June 22nd: THE RETURN OF THE KNEBWORTH FAYRE Appearance: November 12th – 30th: UK #2 (16 performances) ←★Coco★ 1986, March 7th – May 4th: Europe (20 performances), May 26th – August 5th: North America (52 performances) This is UFO from the Tommy M era. UFO disbanded just before the scheduled performance in Japan in May 1983, but the following year, in 1984, Phil Mogg decided to make a comeback. Paul Raymond returns and restarts UFO with new members. It took about a year to release “MISDEMEANOR”. They embarked on a world tour starting in their home country of England. The two performances of this work are the 4th and 14th performances of the “British” leg, which is the beginning. Now, let’s introduce each disc individually. [DISC 1: A masterpiece full recording by the master “Crazy S.”] First up is a valuable full live album of the main Norwich performance of this work. Aside from Disc 2, which is the official pro shot, the main thing that stands out is not just the length. In fact, the person who made this recording a reality is the master “Crazy S.”. This week, the masterpiece “LEICESTER 1983” from the “Crazy S.” collection will also be released at the same time, and this work is its sister edition. It is also a masterpiece that was converted directly to CD from the original cassette. The sound is clear and direct. There is no sense of distance, and all the instruments are neatly separated and thrust right in front of you. In fact, perhaps because it was too powerful (too close?), there were some parts that over-peaked, so we couldn’t make it into a permanent press, but in terms of clarity, it’s one of the best in the “Crazy S.” collection. It’s number one. In addition to that sound, the full show is irresistible. Let’s organize the set here, along with the pro shots described below. New songs (8 songs)・MISDEMEANOR: Heaven’s Gate/This Time/Meanstreets/Name Of Love/The Only Ones/Wreckless/Night Run・Others: The Chase Classics (4 songs)・Too Hot To Handle (★)/Lights Out ( ★) / Only You Can Rock Me / Doctor Doctor / Shoot Shoot (★) *Note: Songs marked with a ★ are only available on the Norwich performance CD on DISC 1. …and it looks like this. They played the then-new album “MISDEMEANOR” and “The Chase,” which was the B-side of the single “This Time,” in large numbers. In the past repertoire, there are no selections from the Paul Chapman era, which was at its peak on the charts, and only masterpieces from the Michael Schenker era are selected. The official pro shot has been edited to about an hour with emphasis on new songs, but this work goes through in one go. The cut classics “Too Hot To Handle”, “Lights Out” and “Shoot Shoot” are also included, and you can enjoy plenty of famous songs that have been changed with Tommy M’s technical guitar. [DISC 2: Long out of print official multi-camera pro shot] Just the recording of “Crazy S.” is enough to fill me up, but this work is even worse. You can also enjoy the official pro shot “THE MISDEMEANOR TOUR” of the Oxford performance, which will take place about two weeks after the Norwich performance. Speaking of the Tommy M era, there were many half-official live albums such as “HEAVEN’S GATE” and “LIVE IN LONDON”, with credits such as “December 14, 1985 London” and “September 1986 Oxford”. Also a big mess. The conclusion is “November 28, 1985 Oxford Performance”. Well, it’s such a professional shot, but of course the quality is super high since it is an official work. As mentioned above, there are three songs missing from the full show, but the real thrill of being able to witness the “moving Tommy M era” is unbearable. In fact, the biggest point of this work is his guitar. Yngwie Malmsteen was also a candidate for the restart, but Tommy, who actually joined, was also very technical. UFO has welcomed various guitarists since then, but Tommy’s taste is fundamentally different from that of the neoclassical era. He explodes with sharp-edged playing that rivals the guitar heroes of LA metal, and his phrases are not just a list of notes, but a melody. It fits perfectly with the relatively simple UFO style, and strangely it doesn’t feel out of place even in classics that have no intention of imitating Schenker. This sense of balance and flair is something Yngwie cannot hope for. His stunning finger movements, looks that correspond to the early hair metal era, and flashy actions are also highlights of the video. Historically, the “Atomic Tommy M” era never resurfaced commercially. However, what was inside was a gravitational singularity filled with a very unique charm. You could say it was the Ian Gillan era for BLACK SABBATH, the Tommy Bolin era for DEEP PURPLE, or the Eddie Jobson era for JETHRO TULL. A luxurious set where you can enjoy a live show in the highest quality where Tommy’s guitar dances vividly, unlike Paul Chapman who was faithful to the basics, and also different from later neoclassic guitarists.
