Description

Starting with Bonnie Raitt’s “THE CHRISTIC INSTITUTE BENEFIT CONCERT 1990 DAY 2: MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES”, the JEMS team will release his recordings of female artists on stage for five consecutive weeks. The second release is the nostalgic Tracy Chapman. Chapman’s first album, which was released in 1988 at the height of synth pop, was a big hit with its simple acoustic sound. It was a literal breeze of fresh air in an era when synths and programmed music were the norm. The album was a huge hit and she became a favorite of the era, and she was a part of the “HUMAN RIGHTS NOW” tour organized by Amnesty International, which featured multiple artists in the latter half of 1988. This package tour attracted a lot of attention as it brought together stars of the time such as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Peter Gabriel, but it made sense for Tracy, a black woman, to participate in this tour that advocated human rights. Millard was probably interested in Springsteen (whose recordings have already been released) and Peter Gabriel (whose masters will be released in the future), but it was none other than Tracy who was in the spotlight so much that even he could not ignore her. In front of the big stars, the up-and-coming Tracy performed a solo acoustic performance in her own style. Since it was an event tour, a large venue like the LA Coliseum was used for the day, but even there she was not afraid to perform a simple stage. On the contrary, she showed enough confidence to sing “Behind The Wall” a cappella. The following year, she also performed the Grammy-winning “Fast Car” on the Coliseum stage, which is a nostalgic classic above all else. She is reliable, warming up the audience waiting for the star with just an acoustic guitar. As for the mirrored sound source this time, the first generation master that was discovered must have had some kind of problem. It has been released in mono. However, this mono sound quality fits Tracy’s stage performance well. And yet, the sound image is always on, as is typical of mirrored recordings. I was really surprised that he even recorded Tracy Chapman, but the quality is excellent this time as well. Rather, it will attract attention from all over the world as a record of her stage performance at the peak of her updraft.
