Description

Tom Petty & THE HEARTBREAKERS were enjoying their heyday in 1981, when their masterpieces “DAMN THE TORPEDOES” and “HARD PROMISES” were awarded platinum albums in quick succession. The original master of Mike Millard, a legendary master who conveys the scene, has been excavated. What is recorded in this work is the “June 30, 1981 Inglewood performance” in which Stevie Nicks also participated as a guest. This is the best audience recording. Speaking of Millard’s Tom Petty recording, it is the second work following “COSTA MESA 1990”, but this time it is from the early 80’s, and the time is even more delicious. Let’s look back at the schedule at that time and check from the show position. [“HARD PROMISES” released on May 5th] ・June 7th – July 8th: North America #1 (18 performances) ←★Coco★ ・July 16th – August 18th: North America #2 (24 performances) )・September 6: Sacramento performance・September 15-October 8: North America #3 (15 performances) This is Tom Petty in 1981. The previous year, in 1980, he made his legendary first visit to Japan and toured Europe and Oceania, but 1981 took a turn for the worse. It wasn’t a world tour, it was just limited to North America, and I spent about four months on the circuit. The Inglewood performance of this work is the beginning of such a situation. This was the 14th concert of “North America #1”. This work recorded at such a show is truly an exquisite audience recording. As expected from Mirrored, the core strength centered on the guitar and the delicate details down to the smallest details are truly magnificent. However, it has a slightly different feel from Millard’s usual works. The reason seems to have been the venue’s setup. Speaking of “THE FORUM”, it is Millard’s main battlefield, and it is like the garden of his home, where all kinds of bands and artists have created masterpieces. I was told that my ticket for this day was in the 4th row, and I thought it was a bit old-fashioned for a sweet spot, but when I got inside, I was shocked. Due to stage expansion, the first two rows were destroyed and became the second row. Normally I’m lucky it’s nearby! However, it was too close for the discerning recording artist. The biggest problem, besides the repercussions, is that it’s too close to Security. The early 1980s must have been a tough time for recording, and even Millard, a seasoned veteran, was sweating in a cold sweat, fearing he would be arrested. Moreover, the PA is directly overhead. Apparently, he was unable to point the microphone in the direction of the PA while hiding it, and the microphone was picked up as well. The above details are the testimony of Jim R, who was watching the show with Millard. If you ask me, it certainly sounds like that, but that is only because it is the Millard standard that is said to be “miraculous and natural” and “more than a sound board for the time being”. It’s a masterpiece that a normal recording artist would record once every few years, but it’s also a beautiful recording so fresh that it makes you sigh, “Aren’t you satisfied with this sound?” is. What is depicted with such beautiful sound is a full show filled with confidence and momentum as a platinum artist. Speaking of Tom from the 1980s, it is customary to refer to the traditional official album “PACK UP THE PLANTATION: LIVE!” (although it may be a bit out of date). As usual, let’s compare and organize. SHELTER era (4 songs) American Girl: American Girl/Breakdown You’re Gonna Get It! : Listen To Her Heart (★) / I Need to Know BACKSTREET / MCA era (9 songs) / Destruction: Here Comes My Girl (★) / Don’t Do Me Like That (★) / Even The Losers (★) / Refugee ・Hard Promise: A Thing About You (★) / The Waiting / A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me) (★) / Insider (with Stevie Nicks) / Kings Road (★) Other covers (5 songs) Cry To Me (★) / Don’t Bring Me Down / Needles and Pins (co-starring Stevie Nicks) / Shout *Note: Songs marked with a “★” cannot be heard on the official version of “PACK UP THE PLANTATION: LIVE!”. …and it looks like this. Although the selection is wide-ranging, the focus is clearly on the concentrated reduction of the two big hits, “DAMN THE TORPEDOES” and “HARD PROMISES.” In addition to the signature songs that later became standard songs, there are songs unique to the 1980s such as “A Thing About You” and “Kings Road,” “Insider,” which was sealed for 25 years, and Solomon Burke’s extremely rare cover “Cry.” There are also some delicious numbers scattered around, such as “To Me.” And the surprise guest that added color to the set was Stevie Nicks! Speaking of Stevie in 1981, his solo debut “BELLA DONNA”, with which Tom also fully cooperated, was a monster hit, but this work was released one month before that. Of course, she was already a big star of FLEETWOOD MAC, and was greeted with great enthusiasm, performing a wonderful duet with two songs, “Insider” and “Needles and Pins.” This is a signature live album by legendary master Millard that captures Tom Petty enjoying his golden age. Great sound, precious masterpieces, and a gorgeous collaboration with Stevie Nicks… A 2-disc set that is endlessly worth listening to at every point. The best audience recording of “June 30, 1981 Inglewood Performance”. This is a masterpiece that was directly digitized from the original master of the legendary master Mike Millard, and it is a beautiful recording that shows the strength of the core centered on the guitar and the delicate details down to the smallest parts. The show is a style that concentrates and reduces the two big hits “DAMN THE TORPEDOES” and “HARD PROMISES” and sprinkles some delicious covers. Stevie Nicks makes a guest appearance on “Insider” and “Needles and Pins,” giving us a wonderful duet. The Forum, Inglewood, CA, USA 30th June 1981 PERFECT SOUND Disc 1 (48:43) 1. Intro. 2.
