Description

The definitive live footage from the release of “Face Dances” is the March 28, 1981, German TV program “Rockpalast” that includes a professional shot of the performance in Essen. At the time of the original release, we used the master of “Essesn 1981” (Import Title), which received high praise in specialized magazines as “the highest image quality ever” and “a clear departure from previous image and sound quality.” There are no dubbing marks in the song credits, etc., and it is clear that this take was copied from a location fairly close to the master. This is a representative video of the Who in the early 1980s, when they added Kenny Jones and Rabbit and captivated fans with their pop, solid, and straight-forward performances. It includes a vivid sound of Pete playing solidly with a telecaster and John pushing hard with harsh bass notes, and the entire set, including the set arrangement unique to this period, is worth watching and listening to. The extremely fresh sound packed into the narrow sound frame of a TV broadcasting range is wonderful, and the sound image is as hard and direct as a tabletop, making this disc even more appealing. The Quiet One featuring John, a new song played in the first half, Don’t Let Go The Coat, Sister Disco, You Better You Bet, etc., whose song style and keyboard make you feel the times, sound fresh. It is easy to understand how much Rabbit contributed to the Who’s sound during this period. An interview is included after Won’t Get Fooled Again. A high-quality version of the classic video, a must-have for fans, is now available with a new jacket and a new original menu. Live at Grugahalle, Essen, Germany 28th March 1981 PRO-SHOT 1. Intro 2.
