Description

The tour that was held in support of the latest and masterpiece album “THE WHO BY NUMBERS” at the time lasted for almost a year, thanks in part to the synergistic effect of the movie version “TOMMY” being a big hit, during Keith Moon’s lifetime. It was also the last live tour. At first glance, this period gives the impression of being rich in items and seems to be a period blessed with high-quality sound sources. However, most of the items released are from the 1976 leg. In fact, Charlton was released nearly 10 years ago, in recent years Jacksonville to Largo, Seattle to Winnipeg, and Toronto, which concluded a long tour, was released last year, but all captured the 1976 stage. We had a track record of releasing Providence in the past for the 1975 leg, which was the first half of the tour, but our store has never released any European or British sound sources before that. In the first place, there are extremely few items that contain the early stages of the “BY NUMBERS” tour, and there was only a CD called “BORIS THE SPIDER” that contained the Ludwigshafen performance on November 7th 20 years ago. This was a decent audience recording and there were some pitch errors, so it was only appreciated by some enthusiasts. The sound sources of the UK and European tours in 1975 were circulating among traders, but as the previous paper jacket CD case proved, the sound quality of all of them was poor. In such a situation, the Studgart performance on November 3rd that will be released this time has actually existed for a long time as an audience recording that boasts exceptionally high sound quality during the 1975 European tour. Although it is a monaural recording, to be frank, the sound quality is much higher than that of Ludwigshafen on the 7th, and it is strange why a sound source boasting such high quality has not been released until now. The performance is captured in a surprisingly well-balanced manner, and in particular, the sounds of Keith’s drums, including his “stomping” bass drum, are vividly captured, making this a recording that is irresistible to Who maniacs. Not to be outdone, the presence of Roger, who is in prime condition and has a wonderful singing voice throughout the album, is also captured with exquisite balance. From this tour, The Who’s engineer Bob Pridden developed a PA system that repurposed some of the speakers stacked on stage to monitor Roger’s vocals. The power of the system that allows you to sing without being distracted by the explosive sounds of other members of The Who is demonstrated, and from “Dreaming From The Waist” onward, Roger’s passionate singing literally shines. However, on this day, the Studgart audience was noisy right after the show started, and it got louder from the middle of the new song “Squeeze Box.” When “Behind Blue Eyes” ended, a frustrated Pete said, “Just be quiet! Just shut up for just one minute! Stop throwing bottles. If you throw at least one from now on, I’ll go home!” ” he scolded harshly. However, it’s not that uncommon to see Pete yelling at the audience at a Who live. As expected, it seemed to have worked, as the audience quickly became calmer, and Pete quickly regained his composure, saying, “Alright, thank you.” It’s interesting. Perhaps they felt that Pete’s appearance was reliable, and from then on, the people near the taper kept shouting “Pete Townsend!” with a bitter smile. Coupled with such tension with the audience, the shortened “TOMMY” set on this day was the best. Since 1971, the Who had avoided performing on stage with the same album, but after the huge success of the movie version, they revived with this tour with a digest arrangement for the stage. That’s what excited the audience on that day, but if I had to describe TOMMY’s set that day in one word, it would be “strong.” Instead of the momentum of “TOMMY” that was in 1969 and 1970, the performance is extremely strong and strong. Roger’s singing, which I mentioned earlier, is especially spectacular, and the wild singing of “The Acid Queen” stands out. In “Fiddle About”, which should be played next, Keith is singing in a dangerous tone, probably due to his intoxication. Even so, it seems that on this day, the performance was not disturbed at all by the other three. Also, in the “TOMMY” set, the tape was changed after “I’m Free”, so the beginning of “Tommy’s Holiday Camp” was missing, but to make up for it, we have purposely used professional shot footage here. Uses the familiar audio from the Houston performance on November 20th. Of course, it will be compensated for from another performance, but that is only because the sound quality of other European and British sound sources was inferior. However, if you listen to this finished product, you will understand that the editing was correct. The connections are extremely smooth, and the adjustments are so natural that you won’t notice it at first glance. The second half of the live performance was as strong as ever. When it came to “Summertime Blues,” John didn’t seem to like the noise from the audience, and protested by singing “fuck the whistle” in the line part of the song. It was a rare scene where John, who always plays the intense bass with no expression on his face, revealed such emotion. In addition, “Bargain” was a repertoire only available in 1975 as part of the “BY NUMBERS” tour, but the extremely strong performance that has evolved since 1971 is overwhelming. Even more than the “TOMMY” set, the best performance in which all of The Who came together is unfolding. And for this release, it was recorded from the master cassette (thankfully, the pitch was accurate from the beginning), and the best recordings of Europe 75 were recorded in their best condition. At a time when there were no proper titles, this is the undisputed definitive item that has finally appeared.
