Description

Teddy Pendergrass spent most of his life in Philadelphia. He was the lead singer of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but left the group in 1976 and released his first solo album on the Philadelphia International label. This live performance from that time is recorded on King Biscuit Flower Hour with the best soundboard recordings. The album mainly features songs from that album, but the R&B number one song by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, “Wake Up Everybody,” is a delightful performance. The last two songs are two hit singles from his first album, and it feels like a declaration that Teddy is finally taking flight into the world. After this, he released five consecutive platinum albums, and although he was paralyzed from the shoulders down in a car accident in March 1982, he recovered and continued to have a successful solo career until he announced his retirement in 2007.
