Although they lost Edgar Froese in 2015, they took a new step in 2018 with the release of “QUANTUM GATE.” Among their concerts in Europe in 2018, the London performances held over two days on April 23rd and 24th were recorded as high-quality audience recordings. The venue was the Union Chapel, a famous tourist attraction built in the 19th century. The live performance in a prestigious church matches their musical style, and the sound quality is also excellent. Another topic of discussion is that on the second day of these two London performances, former JAPAN member Richard Barbieri was the opening act as a special guest, and both days were recorded in full, including that performance. And since the band often uses different sets for each live performance, this is a consecutive performance with a completely replaced set, and even “Stratosfear,” the only song performed on both days, was performed as part of a medley on the first day, and a long performance of over 11 minutes on the second day. Also, from QUANTUM GATE, “It Is Time To Leave When Everyone Is Dancing” and “Roll The Seven Twice” were performed on the first day, and “Genesis Of Precious Thoughts” and “Identity Proven Matrix” were firmly incorporated on the second day to show the current progress. In recent years, Richard Barbieri has been remembered for his work with Porcupine Tree, but on this day he mainly performed ambient solo numbers, and it was surprising to see him perform an instrumental arrangement of JAPAN’s later masterpiece “Ghosts”. Richard also appeared on the main Tangerine stage, and performed a 30-minute improvisation on the highlight of the show, “Final Sequence and Improvisation”, which is a must-listen for his fans.
