Description
Steve Hackett is showcasing his inexhaustible musical spirit with his first concept album in 48 years, “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” since “Voyage of the Acolite.” This stunning video allows you to fully experience the breathtaking “Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights.” This work was filmed at the April 9, 2024, Stafford concert. It’s a superb audience shot. While this is the latest footage recently released, the show itself was shot about six months ago. It’s also different from his current solo tour. To get a sense of the situation, let’s start with a bird’s-eye view of his current activities. 2024 January 20th + 21st: Fletching (2 acoustic shows)《February 16th release of “THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE”》”FOXTROT at FIFTY + HACKETT HIGHLIGHTS”・March 1st – April 19th: North America (24 shows)←★here★”GENESIS GREATS, LAMB HIGHLIGHTS & SOLO”・July 1st – 20th: Europe #1 (13 shows)・October 2nd – November 10th: Europe #2 (23 shows)2025 January 18th + 19th: Fletching (2 acoustic shows)・April 4th – 9th: Cruise To The Edge appearance “GENESIS GREATS, LAMB HIGHLIGHTS & SOLO” April 23rd – May 16th: Europe #3 (14 performances) This is the 2024/2025 schedule that has been announced so far. “FOXTROT at FIFTY + HACKETT HIGHLIGHTS”, celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Foxtrot”, has been running since 2022, but has now been switched to “GENESIS GREATS, LAMB HIGHLIGHTS & SOLO”, featuring “Broadway’s Dazzling”. The Stafford performance of this work was just before that. It was the 21st performance of the final leg, “North America”. This work, which allows you to experience such a show, is a “spectacular view” as written in English. The position is excellent, and it is filmed from a seat at the front of the stage (probably the third row), directly in front of Hackett. The bold zoom from there is amazing. In fact, perhaps because the camera was not held high, the shadows of the front audience are also reflected when pulled back, but the shadows are zoomed out to frame them out. The sight of Hackett’s waist-high shot spilling out of the frame gives the viewer a sense of complete immersion, almost like being in the front row. This immersive experience is supported by Hackett’s motionless staging and the composed audience. While the footage scrolls left and right to highlight each performer’s solos and other highlights, Hackett remains in front of the microphone. With him at the center, the footage feels stable and extremely easy to follow. Additionally (naturally), the audience isn’t the type to get rowdy. The audience, seated and fully immersed in the music, is easily framed and doesn’t interfere with the highlights. The result is a breathtaking view that could be described as “like a single-camera pro shot,” stretching endlessly. This beautiful visual portrayal offers a full show that’s a bit different from the tour’s iconic official release, “FOXTROT AT FIFTY + HACKETT HIGHLIGHTS: LIVE IN BRIGHTON.” To explain what this means, let’s organize the set and compare it. Solo (Part 1: 9 songs) – The Secret Story of the Circus and the Night Whale: People Of The Smoke (★) / Circo Inferno (★) / These Passing Clouds (★) – The Journey of the Acolyte: A Tower Struck Down / Shadow Of The Hierophant – Others: The Devil’s Cathedral / Every Day / Basic Instincts / Camino Royale GENESIS (Part 2/Encore: 8 songs) – Foxtrot (Complete Reproduction): Watcher Of The Skies / Time Table / Get ‘Em Out By Friday / Can-Utility And The Coastliners / Horizons / Supper’s Ready – Encore: Firth Of Fifth / Los Endos *Note: Songs marked with a “★” are songs that could not be heard on the official album “LIVE IN BRIGHTON.” …And so it goes. As in previous years, the format is “Part 1 = Solo / Part 2 = GENESIS,” and the highlight is of course the complete reproduction of Part 2, “FOXTROT.” These changes are unchanged from the official “LIVE IN BRIGHTON” album; only the first part of the solo album has changed. He begins the show with three new songs from “THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE” in quick succession. Even with a concept album like this, it seems impossible to fully recreate the new material, so he only teases out three tracks. This “new first part” is also carried over in its entirety into the current “GENESIS GREATS, LAMB HIGHLIGHTS & SOLO” album. In other words, this album is both the final form of “FOXTROT at FIFTY” and a bridge to the next “LAMB HIGHLIGHTS” album. Even so, Hackett, seemingly transcending the flow of time and space, is magnificent on this album. His voice, facial expressions, and guitar playing belie his 74 years at all. It’s as if time has stopped for him, and the aging of his supposedly young bandmates makes it feel like 2024. While I’m also intrigued by the current “GENESIS GREATS, LAMB HIGHLIGHTS,” a condensed arrangement of “Dazzling Broadway,” this album marks the end of the previous tour. This album allows you to fully experience the final form of “FOXTROT at FIFTY,” including the new songs from “THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE,” an experience impossible to achieve on an official release. This is a superb audience shot from the April 9, 2024, Stafford performance. Shot from a special seat directly in front of Hackett in the front seats (probably the third row), a bold zoom allows Hackett’s waist-up to protrude from the screen. You can fully experience the final form of “FOXTROT at FIFTY,” including the new songs from “THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE,” which were not included in the official “LIVE IN BRIGHTON” album.
